Faye's POV "I, Marcus Jordan, reject you as my mate." A collective gasp rippled through the hall, the words hanging in the air like a lead weight. My hand faltered, releasing the delicate glass that shattered upon impact with the marble floor. The room seemed to tilt on its axis as I stared at him, disbelief and hurt etched across my features. Have you ever loved someone so profoundly, their very presence feels like home? That was me. My upbringing had sculpted me into the ideal mate, primed to complement the partner the goddess bestowed upon me. I'd become so engrossed in fulfilling that role that I'd neglected my own growth. I'd watched friends suffer the sting of rejection, shun away from their packs, and convinced myself my fate would be different. My heart whispered that he was different. But as the moon hung heavy in the night sky, casting a soft glow over the lavish mating ball, Marcus uttered those words. Those dreaded words that shattered my hopes and dreams. A hush fell over the assembly, the whispers of guests fading to a haunting silence. My heartbeat thundered in my ears, the weight of Marcus's rejection settling like a rock in my chest. "What… what did you just say?" I stammered, my voice betraying the turmoil swirling within me. Every word he'd ever spoken, every stolen glance, each touch that had ignited sparks—everything felt like a lie in that moment. Marcus's eyes, once filled with a warmth that could thaw glaciers, remained icy and unyielding. His declaration, like a blade, sliced through the air, severing the connection that had bound us. The room seemed to blur as I tried to make sense of what was happening. Faces around me contorted in surprise or pity, their eyes reflecting the embarrassment I felt burning in my cheeks. How could I have been so blind, so foolish, to believe in a love that was apparently one-sided? A bitter taste flooded my mouth, a mixture of humiliation and the sting of betrayal. My heart ached as if it were shattering, each piece falling into the abyss of reality that Marcus had laid bare before me. The seconds stretched into an eternity as his eyes bore into mine, an unspoken challenge passing between us. The weight of his rejection pressed down on me, but it was in that moment that something sparked deep within. It was a flicker of defiance, a refusal to let this moment define me. With a tremulous breath, I straightened my shoulders, lifting my chin in a gesture of quiet strength. The gathering continued to watch in hushed anticipation, waiting for me to crumble, to shatter like the glass at my feet. But I would not give them the satisfaction. "Very well," I managed, my voice quivering only slightly. "If that's your choice, then so be it." Though my words were steady, my heart raced as I turned and walked away, each step echoing in the cavernous hall. Emotions churned within me—humiliation, anger, and a gnawing sadness. But I knew it won't be the end. Not for me. I would be better. Stronger. ***** "Mom, do we really have to go?" The little girl with brown hair pouted, her fingers dancing across the iPad screen. "Yes, sweetheart. Grandma wants to see you all, and it's also your cousin's mating ball. You can't just skip it," I replied, affectionately tousling her short hair. Manny's scowl deepened, a show of annoyance causing her nose to wrinkle. "But I'm not important. I'm just going to be there, watching. Can't I stay home with Auntie Althea instead?" A playful tap on her head came from the boy sitting beside her, his voice chiming in. "You can't say that, Manny. Cousin Hanni wouldn't like it. You remember how she was when we missed her birthday." "Come on, Fade. You're not thrilled about it either," the third boy with piercing blue eyes spoke up. His gaze held a hint of mischief, resembling the ocean's depths. His words struck a chord within me. My children, grown in size but still so innocent. They understood the weight of my history, the story of my heartbreak. They knew the unease that came with returning to the Light pack, to a world that had once rejected me. Seven years had passed since the devastating rejection. Seven years of rebuilding, of finding success in my own business and exploring the world. Seven years since I gave life to his children, whom he would never know existed. Seven years since I last saw his face, apart from the occasional poster or televised appearance when he won accolades as the world's best alpha. His rise to power was impressive, his reputation growing. And yet, in all that time, he remained oblivious to the existence of his offspring. I snorted softly, my gaze fixed on the family estate as it loomed into view through the car window. "It's alright, Dylan. I'll manage. Let's just get this over with." As we stepped into the family estate, a place now transformed to host my second cousin's mating ball, my children led the way. Dylan and Fade were dapper in their dark blue suits, while Manny donned a white princess dress that seemed to enhance her innocence. Time had flown, and they were growing faster than I could comprehend. Soon enough, their inherited werewolf traits would make them even more substantial, more mature. My mother, Jennifer, approached, her blue dress exuding elegance. She leaned in to kiss my cheeks and brushed gentle kisses on my children's foreheads. "Look at you all, grown since the last time I saw you," she observed with a smile. Manny, not one to hold back, squirmed out of her arms. "Grandma, you know I hate hugs," she quipped, a playful tone lacing her words. Jennifer chuckled, mischief in her eyes. "So, you don't miss me then?" Dylan stepped forward, hugging her legs warmly. "If Manny doesn't miss you, just know that I do." Jennifer rolled her eyes, amusement dancing in their depths. "Is that so, young man? And what's your motivation for this sudden affection?" Dylan's response was unapologetically candid. "I heard there are hot cross buns around." Their laughter echoed in the air, a light moment that seemed to bridge generations. As they shared this bond, I found myself withdrawing slightly, tucking my hands into the pockets of my dark blue coat. My mother's perceptive gaze met mine, a silent conversation passing between us. I nodded subtly, an assurance that everything was alright, despite the turmoil that once plagued me. The fear that something might go wrong. With a gentle nod, she whisked the kids away, leaving me to my own devices. As the sounds of joy and music swirled around me, I raised a glass of wine to my lips, the crimson liquid a bittersweet reminder of the complexities that defined my past. As the party progressed, I checked my watch, realizing it was time to administer the usual dose of suppressant to my children. It was a bittersweet routine, a reminder of the careful balance I had to maintain. I excused myself from the festivities and headed towards the private rooms. Upon entering, I reached for the small vial on the dresser, carefully measuring the dose that would keep my children's secret. Their innocence was both a blessing and a curse; they were growing quickly, soon to exhibit traits that even I don't understand, but the world outside was not always forgiving to those like them. Just as I finished administering the suppressant, a chilling sense of unease struck me like a bolt of lightning. I felt a knot forming in the pit of my stomach, an unspoken premonition that something was amiss. My heart raced as I hurried out of the room, instinct leading me to the kitchen. What I stumbled upon was a scene of sheer horror. My mother, sprawled unconscious on the ground, her eyes rolled back in her head. Blood stained the once pristine kitchen table, casting a sinister shadow over the room. A guttural scream escaped my lips as I rushed to her side, my trembling hands reaching out to her limp form. Fear and panic gripped my heart, each beat echoing the terrifying possibilities that raced through my mind. But as my gaze darted around the room, the ultimate horror struck me like a bolt of lightning. A numbing realization that tore through my very soul. They were gone. My triplets, my precious children, were nowhere to be found.
