The morning sun streamed through the hospital window as Emma sat beside Michael's bed. Seeing her younger brother smiling again brought a peace she hadn't felt in days.
"You should go home and get some rest," Michael said. "You've barely slept."
Emma smiled faintly. "I'll rest after you're discharged."
Just then, there was a knock on the door.
Daniel stepped inside, carrying a bouquet of white lilies and a bag of fresh fruit.
"Good morning," he said.
Michael grinned. "You're back."
Daniel laughed softly. "I promised I'd visit."
Emma watched the exchange in silence. Five years ago, Daniel had been like an older brother to Michael. It felt strange seeing them together again.
"I'll wait outside," Daniel said, sensing Emma's hesitation.
After Michael fell asleep, Emma found Daniel standing on the hospital balcony, gazing at the city below.
"You've been avoiding me," he said without turning around.
"I don't know what to say."
"Then let me talk."
Emma folded her arms.
"I'm listening."
Daniel took a deep breath.
"After my father collapsed, I discovered our company was drowning in debt. Loan sharks were threatening my family. My mother believed marrying into another wealthy family was the only way to save us."
Emma's eyes widened.
"She wanted you to marry someone else?"
"Yes."
"But you didn't."
"I refused."
He pulled an old envelope from his jacket.
"I wrote you dozens of letters."
Emma frowned.
"I never received them."
"My mother kept every single one."
He handed her the envelope.
Inside were several yellowed letters, all addressed to Emma.
Her hands trembled as she opened the first one.
Emma,
If you're reading this, it means I finally found the courage to explain everything. I haven't stopped loving you for a single day. I'm fighting to come back to you... Please don't lose faith in us.
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
"They were real..."
"I never abandoned you."
Emma looked at him, her heart aching with regret.
"So... all these years..."
"You hated me because someone else chose our future."
Before either of them could speak again, Daniel's phone rang.
His expression changed the moment he answered.
"I'm on my way."
He ended the call.
"What's wrong?"
"Our company is under attack. Someone is trying to take it over."
"Who?"
Daniel's eyes darkened.
"I don't know yet."
Emma noticed the tension in his face.
For the first time, she realized Daniel wasn't just carrying the weight of their broken love.
He was fighting a battle that could destroy everything he had left.
As he hurried away, Emma looked down at the letters still clutched in her hands.
For five years she had believed he had stopped loving her.
Now she knew the truth.
The distance between them hadn't been caused by a lack of love...
It had been caused by lies.
And for the first time since they met again, Emma whispered the words Daniel had longed to hear.
