The rain poured relentlessly over the city as Emma Lawson stood outside the old café where she and Daniel Brooks had shared countless dreams five years earlier. She tightened her coat around her shoulders, wondering why she had agreed to meet him after all this time.
When Daniel walked through the glass door, time seemed to pause. He looked older, more confident, yet the warmth in his deep brown eyes remained unchanged.
"Emma," he said softly.
She forced a polite smile. "It's been a long time."
"It has."
An awkward silence settled between them before they found a table by the window. Neither knew where to begin.
"I heard about your promotion," Daniel said.
"Thanks. I work as an architect now."
"I'm proud of you."
His words stirred memories she had spent years trying to bury. Once, they had planned a future together. They had dreamed of building a home, raising children, and growing old side by side. But everything had fallen apart the day Daniel disappeared without explanation.
Emma looked at him. "Why did you ask me to come?"
Daniel lowered his eyes. "Because I owe you the truth."
She folded her arms. "Five years later?"
"I know it's late. But not a day has passed without me regretting what happened."
Emma's heart beat faster, though she refused to let him see it.
"I didn't leave because I stopped loving you," he continued. "The day before our wedding, my father suffered a severe stroke. His business was drowning in debt, and I had to choose between staying with you or saving my family from losing everything."
"You could have told me."
"I wanted to. But my mother begged me to keep everything secret until we solved the crisis. By the time I came back, you had moved away."
Emma blinked away tears. For years she had believed he had abandoned her for another woman.
"So all this time..."
"I never stopped loving you."
Before she could answer, her phone rang.
It was the hospital.
Her younger brother had been involved in a serious accident.
Emma rushed from the café without another word, unaware that Daniel was already following close behind, determined not to lose her a second time.
She had run out of options.
Just then, the finance manager walked over with a smile.
"Miss Lawson?"
"Yes?"
"Your brother's hospital bill has already been settled."
Her eyes widened.
"What?"
"It was paid anonymously."
Emma didn't need anyone to tell her who had done it.
She hurried outside.
Daniel was standing beneath a large tree across the street.
"You promised you wouldn't," she said.
"I promised I wouldn't expect anything back."
"You can't solve every problem with money."
"I know."
"Then why?"
He stepped closer.
"Because watching you suffer hurts me more than losing that money ever could."
Emma stared at him, unable to speak.
For years she had convinced herself that he no longer cared.
Now, every action proved otherwise.
Michael's surgery was successful.
Three days later, he finally opened his eyes.
Emma smiled through happy tears.
"You scared me."
"I'm sorry, Sis."
Michael glanced toward the door.
"That man... Daniel... never left."
Emma turned.
Daniel was asleep in the hallway chair, still wearing the same jacket he had arrived in days earlier.
Michael smiled weakly.
"If he doesn't love you, I don't know what love is."
Emma remained silent.
Maybe... just maybe... she had been wrong about him all these years.
As she watched Daniel sleeping, a small c***k began to form around the wall she had built to protect her heart.
She wasn't ready to forgive him.
But for the first time in five years...
She was willing to listen.
