Legend of the Moon Wolf

Prologue

Gunnar POV

“Gunnar? Where are you?” Mommy calls. I don’t say a word ‘cause I’m hiding from my big brother Kane. I asked him if we could play hide and seek a whole bunch of times and he said yes! I was so excited I went straight to my special hiding spot. He said he would count to ten and made me promise not to come out until he found me. That was after breakfast and I’ve been here since. I must be the best hider in the whole wide world. I’m really hungry and really thirsty but I promised I wouldn’t leave so I won’t.

“GUNNAR! YOU BETTER GET YOUR ASS TO BED IN THE NEXT 5 MINUTES OR WE WILL DO NOTHING AND I MEAN NOTHING FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY TOMORROW!” Mommy yells for me. It’s bedtime already? But I didn’t eat lunch or dinner. Oh well I don’t want mommy to be mad so I rush out of my hiding space and straight to my room. I better get ready to go to sleep fast. My birthday is the only day that mommy and daddy actually pay attention to me and I get to do what I want. Mommy comes storming into the room.

“Gunnar?! Where the hell have you been?!”

“I was playing hide and seek with Kane. Mommy I’m the best hider in the whole wide world, Kane still never found me the whole day!”

“How long have you been hiding Gunnar?” Mommy asks.

“Kane said he would play with me after breakfast. He started to count and I hid. I only stop hiding when you yelled at me to come to bed.”

“So you didn’t eat lunch or dinner? What’s wrong with you? Are you really that naive?” Mommy says sounding mad again.

“What does naive mean mommy?”

“Nothing.” Mommy sighs. “Go to sleep. Your cousins are coming tomorrow for your birthday and I want to look my best. You need to be well rested.”

“But mommy, since it’s my birthday tomorrow, can you please tell me a bedtime story?”

“Fine.” Mommy says harshly, she sighs again. “Which one do you want?”

“My favorite one mommy.”

“Aren’t you getting too old for this? Don’t you want to hear something new?” Mommy asks.

“Nope.” I say popping the P sound with a big smile on my face.

“Alright. The legend of the Moon Wolf..”

Long ago when the gods and goddesses lived amongst humans a shift began. Supernatural creatures didn’t exist yet. But that all changed when the Moon Goddess Selene and her twin brother Helios the Sun God decided they wanted more out of life so they began to explore the earth together. Both of them fell deeply in love with humans. The other gods and goddesses looked down upon these relationships, seeing humans as lowly beings. They were persecuted and ostracized but love was more important to them. Rumors spread that the other gods and goddesses wanted to get rid of the humans they fell in love with, however it was too late. Both Selene and Helios found themselves have reproduced with their lovers. Selene and Helios worrying for their future children decided to grant them special abilities, thus developing the supernatural race. Helios granted his child the gift of light and the ability to control the elements. Having wings to call upon and endless beauty, the first fae being born. Selene granted her child the power of the creature so dedicated to the moon. Great strength and rapid healing. The ability to transform into wolves, the first werewolf was created.

Hades, the younger brother of Selene and Helios, was the god of the dead. He felt slighted in his gifts, never getting to fully enjoy the freedom he so craved as he had to constantly watch over the underworld. When his siblings left he felt abandoned by them and jealous that they could go explore the world and find love when he could not. These feelings quickly turning to raged and hatred, Hades decided he would make a visit to the human world and experiment on them. Impregnating two human women, he created two new creatures. One encased in darkness, allowed to walk in the sun but preferring the shadows. To stay alive this creature must feed on the blood of another living creature, but has great abilities such as lightning speed and enormous strength. It’s only weakness being a wooden stake to the heart, fire and decapitation. The first vampire was born. The other creature seemingly human except for great magic ability and other specialized skills, each one having a different skill then the next. Thus the first witch was created. Hades in his rage sent his children after the children of Selene and Helios. His son the vampire went after the werewolf, however his daughter the witch refused to be apart of his plans. Headstrong and wanting to be apart of her own free will, she used a spell to make he entire village have the same magical powers and abilities she did. She wanted to share in her abilities and have kinship throughout the world so she went off on her own journey leaving her brother to do their father’s bidding.

Her brother realized by drinking the blood of another human and feeding them some of his own blood. He could create more vampires who could help him destroy the werewolf. He took his clan of vampires and set out on a path to destroy not only the werewolf but the fae too. Selene and Helios worrying for their children’s safety, they told decided to gift deserving humans the same abilities as their children, creating more werewolves and fae to defend each other against the threat of the vampires. Selene decide to grant her daughter, the first werewolf, powers like no other. Her powers rivaled that of the fae being able to control all of the elements whether in human or wolf form. Her strength increasing and also having the ability not only to heal herself but to heal others as well. Beautiful when human, however when she transformed into her wolf her fur blended with periwinkle, white, and silver. She truly looked like the reflection of the moon becoming the legendary moon wolf.

After a great battle, the werewolves and fae were able to defeat the vampires and they went into hiding. Selene and Helios returned to their realms deciding to watch over all their creatures from above. They both decided they wanted all the creatures bother supernatural and human to have everlasting true love, just like the love they had found so they created soulmates. Two souls tethered to each other and fated to find one another. However, this would not be all binding believing that free will and choices were of utmost importance, you can always reject your soulmate, however a second chance isn’t guaranteed and only gifted to those deemed worthy. With the happiness and hope that love brings they hope this could help Hades creatures feel included and hopefully close the divide between the vampires and the rest of the world.

As time went on and the world changed, humans weren’t aware of supernaturals creature still existing and instead turned them into folklore. The supernatural creatures decided to stay within their own species. Spread in various locations across the earth, vampires had clans, witches had covens, fae had kingdoms, and werewolves had packs. Their is a supernatural council that upholds the laws created by the supernaturals long ago and jeeps the humans from finding out that they do truly exist. The council is made up of 4 elders, once from each species.

As for the legendary moon wolf, one hasn’t been seen for thousands of years. Believed to truly be just a legend. However, the moon wolf and the power that comes with it is only given to a girl deemed special by the moon goddess. Selene only gifting this wolf to a girl just like her daughter, pure of heart and full of light. Also, Selene only grants this power when there is times of trouble ahead and when she feels that the power of the moon wolf is the only way to keep the balance and restore order to the world. There has only been a few moon wolfs ever recorded throughout history.

There is a prophecy about the moon wolf. The legend and the prophecy being told throughout the generations of werewolves. The prophecy states: A girl unsuspecting and unaware, who is lost in herself and in her faith in the moon goddess will face the utmost difficulty. Granted the power of the moon, she will have to turn the tide. Darkness is coming and threatens everything she knows and loves. She will endure pain and hardships and have the weight of the world relying solely on her. She will need to find her soulmate, a love spanning generations and restore her faith in the moon goddess. Then she will need to find magic, light, and shadows in order to save not only the people most important to her but the entire world. She can not do this alone. If she does not find all of these things and tries to continue on her destined path, she will fail. The world as we know it will be lost to pure evil. Only she can guide the future to a place of peace.

“Goodnight.” Mommy says as she leaves the room shutting off the light. I lay there thinking about the moon wolf and how pretty she must be. Mommy has been telling me the legend for years and every time she does I dream of the moon wolf and a big black wolf sleeping under the stars together. Maybe one day I’ll meet a moon wolf! I rub my eyes feeling sleepy. I turn over, close my eyes ready for my 8th birthday tomorrow, and dream of my moon wolf..
