Chapter 7: Wolf's Bane

Ash walked upstairs into the bathroom. Walking upstairs I grabbed various clothes from my fathers bedroom and left it on the hallway table outside his bedroom . Liam and Jarred had both decided to shower Jarred taking the joined bathroom in my dads room and Liam was in my bathroom.Walking into my bedroom grabbing clothes for Ash, I could hear the sounds of water falling in the shower, moving past the bathroom door I go to sit on the bed I took out my phone to check for any messages. Switching on my phone the bright light illuminating my face, there were two and the first one was from Andy, I clicked on it and opened the message.

ANDY:

Hey hope you have an amazing birthday I waited until midnight for you so you better be happy because I'm tired and don't be surprised if I am grouchy tomorrow, well I guess today. Remind me again why we have these traditions?

12:01am today

I smiled when I saw the message oh, my best friend how much has happened and the worst part is that I can't tell him... He keeps nothing from me, but yet I keep a lot of secrets from him... But I knew that unless a human is either in danger by another supernatural creature or is a mate to one of us, we can't breathe a word to them. It's terrible, but it's the way it is. I replied, knowing that he was probably asleep by now.

CLARE:

Hey thanks for waiting for me, don't worry I will bring the chocolate and some Starbucks coffee for you tomorrow morning, and you can be as grouchy as you want.

Sent at 01:10 am

I got out of the chat and looked at the other message, it was from my dad.

DAD:

Hey honey the storm is coming in strongly here at the pack house, my self and Beta Daniel will stay here until it passes, so we won't be coming home. You kids be careful, all right? I still have people guarding the house, so you will be fine, I promise.

Oh, and by the way happy birthday.

12:15 am

I was near tears when I saw the message and this is the most affection I have gotten from my dad in a long time and only now did I realize how much I missed him I have always been with my dad since day one, and I honestly don't know how I survived without him these past years.

My bathroom door opened and here came my savior. Liam walked up to me and engulfed me into a warm hug, comforting me. My feelings overwhelmed my and I cried in his arms, the tears wetting his shirt.

I breathed in deeply, he smelt like the shower he just had, but he still smelt of the forest and the ocean. It calmed me and I felt at home and my tears trickled to a stop.

He kissed my head and said, "Now that you have calmed down, what made you so upset?"

I shrugged and shook my head, pulling away gently, looking him in the eye.

"How did you know?", I tried to make a joke but failed measurably, seeing the look on his face I decided to answer truthfully.

"It's nothing, I'm just so emotional, and my dad sent me a message and I just broke."

"It isn't, nothing, you were in tears, and it's okay not to be okay."

"Did you just quote 13 reasons why?"

"Maybe?"

I laughed and leaned in to kiss his cheek. "You just being here being near me it helps" I could feel my wolf agreeing to it as well.

He reaches up combing his fingers through my now really messy hair.

"My beautiful mate", he looks into my eyes lovingly.

"I should go shower", I say after awhile. He nods in agreement and moves to stretch out on my bed.

"I will just relax here" he mumbles into the decorative pillow on my bed.

Grabbing my clothes I walk into my bathroom closing the door behind me.

The girl looking at me in the mirror is a lot different than the girl I was just yesterday, she looks tired but there's a glint in her eye that shows her happiness. Sighing I walk into the shower and get myself cleaned up.

After a few minutes, I felt refreshed, and so I walked downstairs towards the living room. Liam following me closely.

Ash and Jarred looked at us with astonishment, and Jarred basically spat out his food.

He looked from me to Liam and then back to me eventually asking, "Okay hold up since when were you two so close?"

Ash nodded and added, "I was going to ask earlier but I could see that it wasn't the time yet.Did you tell her you were mates or something?"she looked to Liam pointingly.

Liam shook his head and chuckled, "No, she found out all by herself as it being her eighteenth and all?"

Jarred and Ash looked at each other and said simultaneously, "Wait, what?!"

Both Jarred and Ash came up to me to hug me,"Happy Birthday"

She smiled and said to both Liam and me, "And congrats to you two as well"

Liam smiled and said "Come let's go get some sleep"

We all nodded and Jarred taking dibs on my fathers bed while Ash went to the spare room leaving Liam and I to share my bed.

The thought of sharing a bed with Liam made me blush, he was after all still a complete stranger to me but before my thoughts could run away from me my doorbell rang downstairs.

Liam looked at me confused, "Do you think it could be that delivery driver?"

"This late? I doubt it I am pretty sure he is never coming back" I say making my way downstairs before I could go to open the door Liam grabs my gently by the waist.

Liam moves in front of me and looked through the peep-hole and looked back at me.

"There's none there"

"Who could be up this late?"

Liam shrugged his shoulders and said, "Your guess is as good as mine, babe"

"Do you think I should open up?"

" Yeah if you must but just quickly okay?" he stands guard ready to jump into action if anyone was actually outside.

I nodded and put my hand on the door handle and took the keys and unlocked it, only opening it a jar.

As I poked my head out I saw that there was an envelope laying on the welcome mat and as I reached out to grasp it. Moving myself out of the door way, I go to close the door.

Liam stops me and walks outside, following after him I look to see what caught his eye. That's when I see it something was laying on our front lawn.We both walk up to it a feeling of unease and dread overwhelms me, something didn't feel right.

The cold wind biting at our bodies and the damp grass making us shiver as we approached, the storm was still ragging around us even when the rain wasn't coming down as much while we were out there.

Once we got closer the shape turned out to look more like a body.

A muffled whimper escaped my lips, the person lying there was my dad. His clothes he was wearing from earlier damp and cold. Grabbing him and I shook him calling out his name, Liam came and picked him up telling me to go inside. As we got inside, Liam placed my dad on the couch and I locked the door. My dads skin was pale and ice cold my heart hammered in my chest. Jarred and Ash had already come downstairs to check what was going on.

My mind was swirling with questions. What was my dad doing here? What happened to staying at the pack house? Where were the pack members that where supposed to be guarding me? My hands twisting into balls, only then did i remember the letter from earlier, rushing to the front door I bent down to grab it where it had fallen.

Shaking, I opened the letter and it read:

Congrats on the mate, my love, but we both know you are only truly mine. Don't worry about your dad he only has a little Wolf's bane in him, so he isn't dead, he just meddled too much in my business.
