Chapter 9: The Static Gambit

725 Words
The Titan took another step, the heavy floor plates groaning under its immense, crushing weight, each stride sending a tremor through the facility’s foundation. Zarah knew her sidearm was effectively useless against that much hardened composite armor; she couldn't punch holes in a walking tank, but she could disrupt the facility's power flow. She needed a catalyst, and she was the only variable left in this equation. She sprinted from cover, sliding underneath the Titan's sweeping, piston-driven legs, the machine’s massive sensors pivoting with a grinding, metallic screech that set her teeth on edge. It was too slow for her, too focused on the threat she posed with her weapon rather than the tactical maneuver she was actually executing. She didn't head for the exit; she headed for the secondary coolant conduit running along the wall, directly beneath a massive, exposed overhead junction box that fed power to the entire containment wing. "Kira, I need you to spike the load!" Zarah shouted, her voice barely audible over the Titan's rhythmic, predatory stomping. "Dump the entire district's power grid into this unit's charging port! Now!" "If I do that, the whole sector will black out!" Kira’s voice was strained, the sound of rapid, frantic, and desperate typing echoing in Zarah's ear. "You’ll be trapped in total darkness, Zarah! You’ll be blind in the middle of a war zone!" "Better the dark than a scrap heap!" Zarah yelled, her voice a roar of defiance. She reached the junction box, her fingers tearing at the hardened plastic casing, and ripped open the housing to reveal the humming, lethal guts of the conduit. She jammed her own interface cable directly into the raw power bus, the cable sparking against her palm. The effect was instantaneous, a violent, surging arc of electricity leaping from the wall and slamming into the Titan’s internal systems. The machine froze, its internal power regulators struggling and failing to vent the massive, sudden spike of raw energy. It began to shudder, the sound like grinding gears in a desperate death rattle, its glowing white sensors flickering to a frantic, erratic red that strobed against the walls. Zarah didn't wait to see the behemoth collapse. She scrambled back toward the tank, her muscles burning, and grabbed the manual override lever. She couldn't take Connor with her—not yet—but she could mask his vitals. She keyed in a "Ghost Loop"—a sophisticated, high-level program that would feed the facility's monitoring system a fake, stabilized heart rate and oxygen reading for his stack, hiding his true, suffering status from the department’s central servers. As she engaged the loop, the entire facility plunged into absolute, crushing darkness. The strobing red lights vanished, the incessant hum of the ventilation died, and the only sound was the heavy, labored, mechanical breathing of the dying Titan unit as its systems went offline. She stood in the suffocating, holy silence, her own breath coming in ragged, painful gasps. She knew the blackout wouldn't last—emergency power would kick in within minutes, bringing the facility’s security systems back to full alert—but it was enough to cover her tracks. She moved silently through the dark, guided only by the faint, lingering blue glow of Connor’s stasis tank, a beacon in the abyss. She reached the blast door, finding it partially forced open by the power surge. She slipped through just as the emergency red-lights began to stutter back to life, casting long, twisted shadows across the corridor. She was out, but she was exhausted, her body aching from the raw physical strain of the combat and the lingering, cold terror of near-capture. She emerged back into the rain-slicked hell of The Rust, the cold, acidic wind hitting her face like a stinging slap. She was bruised, bleeding, and entirely alone, but she had achieved the impossible: she had bought Connor time. She turned back to the facility, her eyes narrowing as she looked at the fortress of hate and greed. She knew where he was, she knew exactly what Project: Soul-Reaping was, and she knew the terrible price of silence. Stay safe, Con, she whispered into the freezing, relentless rain. I’m coming back for you. And when I do, I’m bringing this whole place down to the bedrock.
