“Isabella Romano.”
The name didn’t just echo in my ears.
It rewired my entire reality.
For a second, I actually thought I might faint.
My knees weakened, but Ethan’s grip on my arm tightened instantly, holding me upright like I weighed nothing.
“That’s not real,” I whispered.
My voice sounded distant.
Detached.
Like it belonged to someone else watching this happen.
Lucien Vale didn’t blink.
“Real doesn’t need your permission,” he said calmly.
The hospital alarms continued screaming outside the room, but inside everything felt unnaturally still.
Damien finally broke the silence.
“This is exactly what I warned you about,” he said, but his voice wasn’t directed at Lucien anymore.
It was directed at Ethan.
My head snapped toward him.
“You warned me?” I repeated.
Damien froze.
For the first time, he actually looked cornered.
Ethan didn’t let him respond.
“Not here,” Ethan said sharply.
But I wasn’t listening to Ethan anymore.
I was looking at Damien.
The boy I trusted.
The boy who just stood there while my entire identity collapsed in real time.
“You knew,” I said slowly.
Damien’s silence answered before his mouth did.
My throat tightened.
“No,” I whispered. “No, you don’t get to do that. You don’t get to stand there and look at me like this is normal.”
Damien took a step forward.
“Isabella”
“Stop,” I snapped.
My voice cracked.
That made me hate it more.
Lucien watched all of it like he was observing something delicate cracking under pressure.
Like this was expected.
Like this was already written.
My father suddenly spoke from the bed.
“Remove him.”
His voice was weak, but the command was still absolute.
Security shifted instantly toward Lucien.
But Lucien didn’t move.
Didn’t even look at them.
Instead, his eyes stayed on me.
“You’re confused,” he said gently.
I laughed once.
A broken sound.
“Confused?” I repeated. “You just told me my entire life is a lie.”
Lucien tilted his head slightly.
“No,” he corrected. “I told you it was hidden.”
Ethan stepped between me and Lucien again.
“Enough,” Ethan said.
There was something different in his tone now.
Stricter.
Colder.
Like he was no longer debating.
He was deciding.
Lucien finally looked at him.
And for the first time, the calm in his expression shifted.
Just slightly.
Recognition.
“You’re still protecting her,” Lucien said.
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“Step back.”
Lucien smiled faintly.
“You always were loyal.”
That line hit harder than it should have.
Because Ethan didn’t deny it.
My stomach twisted.
What did that mean?
What history did they share?
Before I could ask, the hospital building shook again.
Harder this time.
A distant explosion echoed from somewhere below.
The lights flickered violently.
Emergency systems screamed louder.
Damien immediately grabbed my hand.
“We have to go,” he said urgently.
“Go where?” I demanded.
“This place is compromised,” he replied.
Lucien finally shifted his gaze away from me.
Toward the hallway.
Like he was listening to something no one else could hear.
Then he sighed softly.
“It’s already begun,” he said.
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“Explain.”
Lucien turned slightly.
“Your war is no longer contained.”
Ethan’s voice cut through.
“This isn’t just about us anymore,” he said.
Lucien looked at him.
“And you’re just realizing that now?”
The tension between them thickened instantly.
But I couldn’t focus on that anymore.
Because something worse was happening.
I could feel it.
Like the building itself was changing.
Like we were no longer safe inside it.
Another explosion.
Closer.
The walls rattled.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
A scream echoed from the hallway outside.
Then silence.
Too sudden.
Too clean.
My breathing turned shallow.
“What’s happening?” I whispered.
No one answered immediately.
Not even Ethan.
That silence again.
The one that always came before something irreversible.
Then Lucien spoke softly.
“They’re not trying to kill your father anymore.”
My heart dropped.
Damien stiffened.
Ethan’s grip on my arm tightened slightly.
Lucien’s eyes returned to me.
“They’re trying to take you.”
The words didn’t process at first.
Then they did.
And fear hit me so hard I almost stumbled backward.
“No,” I said instantly. “No, I’m not going anywhere with anyone.”
Lucien shook his head slowly.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand perfectly,” I snapped. “Someone tried to shoot me, someone is lying about my life, and now you’re all acting like I’m some object to be moved around.”
Ethan looked at me sharply.
“That’s not what this is.”
“Then what is it?” I demanded.
Silence.
Even Ethan didn’t answer right away.
Damien finally spoke, his voice low.
“It’s a claim.”
My chest tightened.
“What?”
Lucien’s gaze sharpened slightly.
“A reclamation,” he corrected.
My blood ran cold.
Ethan stepped forward again.
“Not like this,” he said.
Lucien smiled faintly.
“It was always going to be like this.”
Another loud crash shook the building.
The emergency lights died completely this time.
Total darkness swallowed us.
No backup.
No flicker.
Nothing.
And in that darkness…
A voice came from the hallway again.
But this time it wasn’t alone.
Multiple footsteps.
Close.
Surrounding.
Damien pulled me behind him instantly.
Ethan moved too, but in a different direction.
Like he was positioning.
Calculating.
My father’s voice cut through the dark.
“Hold the line.”
Then.....
The doors burst open.
And the last thing I saw before the hallway floodlights came on…
Was men in black tactical gear flooding into the room.
Not hospital security.
Not police.
Something else entirely.
And on their shoulders.....
The same symbol I saw on Lucien’s wrist.
My breath stopped.
Because I realized something terrifying.
Lucien hadn’t come alone.
He had come first.
And now…
They had come for me.
