Chapter 3: The Deal Lina’s ears rang in the silence after Asher’s words. The bat lay forgotten on the floor, her hands clenched into fists at her sides. The room felt smaller, the air thicker, as if his presence alone sucked out every ounce of oxygen. “You’re blackmailing me.” Her voice came out low, venomous. “That’s what this is.” Asher didn’t flinch. He slipped the forged application back into a sleek leather folder, his movements precise, unhurried. “Call it leverage. You took something that belongs to me—my name, my reputation. I’m offering a way to earn it back.” “Earn it back?” She laughed, sharp and bitter, stepping closer until she could see the faint stubble along his jaw, the way his eyes didn’t waver. “I took it because your world doesn’t give a damn about people like us. Foundations, aid programs—all gates and guards. My brother is dying, Mr. Knox. Dying. And you’re standing here threatening to make it worse.” His expression remained stone. “I’m aware of your brother’s condition. The records were thorough.” “Then you know why I did it.” She jabbed a finger toward his chest, stopping just short of touching him. “You have money pouring out of your ears. One signature wouldn’t have hurt you. But no—you track me down, trash my place, and wave prison over my head like it’s nothing.” Asher’s gaze flicked to her outstretched hand, then back to her face. “Desperation doesn’t excuse fraud. It explains it. That’s why I’m here instead of with the authorities.” Lina dropped her arm, chest heaving. She wanted to scream, to swing the bat again, to wipe that calm superiority off his face. But Milo’s face flashed in her mind—pale, hopeful, waiting in that hospital bed. “What exactly do you want from me?” she asked finally, hating how small her voice sounded. Asher set the folder on her dresser and straightened. “My company is under pressure. Investors—led by a man named Victor Lang—are maneuvering for control. Leaks, sabotage, boardroom games. I need someone with… unconventional skills. Someone who thinks like the people trying to undermine me.” She stared. “You want me to what—play spy? I sling hashbrowns and clean tables. I’m not some corporate shark.” “You’re resourceful.” He gestured to the scattered bills. “You navigate systems designed to keep you out. You spot weaknesses. And you’re invisible—no one in my circles would suspect you.” Lina crossed her arms, buying time. Her mind raced. Work for him. Live in his world. The words echoed. “And Milo?” “He stays out of foster care. I’ll ensure his treatment continues—through legitimate channels. Quietly. No strings beyond your cooperation.” “No strings,” she repeated flatly. “Except I’m your prisoner.” “Employee,” he corrected. “With a contract. Room, board, salary. You’ll have access to resources you’ve never dreamed of. Refuse, and the forgery goes public. Fraud charges. Neglect charges for your brother. You know how the system works—it grinds slow, but it grinds fine.” She turned away, pacing the small space between the bed and the wall. Three steps one way, three back. Her life had been a series of impossible choices—quit school to work when Mom got sick, forge school documents to keep Milo enrolled, steal Wi-Fi to apply for jobs. This was just bigger. Crueler. “How long?” she asked without looking at him. “Until the threat is neutralized. Months, perhaps a year.” A year. Trapped in his orbit. But Milo safe. Treated. Alive. She faced him again, chin lifted. “I want it in writing. Everything. Milo’s care, no charges, my freedom when it’s over. And I’m not your slave—I come and go as needed for him.” Asher inclined his head. “Agreed. My legal team will draft it tonight.” “Tonight?” Her stomach dropped. “You start immediately. Pack what you need. We leave now.” “Now?” She glanced around the wrecked apartment. “You expect me to just—” “Yes.” He moved toward the door, pausing only to add, “My driver is downstairs. Bring your brother’s medical files if you have them. We’ll handle the rest.” Lina stood frozen as he stepped into the living room. The finality hit her like a wave. No time to process, no goodbye to the crumbling life she’d fought to hold together. She grabbed a duffel from under the bed and shoved in clothes, her few photos, Milo’s favorite hoodie. Her hands shook, but she didn’t let tears come. Not in front of him. In the living room, two men in dark suits waited—his “team,” silent and professional. They’d already boxed up her essentials: laptop replacement, toiletries, even the coffee mug with the chipped handle. Asher stood by the open door, checking his watch. “Time to go.” She slung the bag over her shoulder and walked past him without a word. Down the stairs, out into the fading evening light. A black SUV idled at the curb, engine purring softly. One of the men opened the back door. Asher gestured for her to get in first. Lina hesitated on the sidewalk, looking back at her building—the flickering hallway light, the graffiti, the place that had been home through hell. Then she climbed in. The door shut with a solid thunk. Asher settled beside her, the divider rising to separate them from the driver. As the SUV pulled away, the city blurred past the tinted windows. Skyscrapers loomed taller, streets cleaner, the divide between her world and his sharpening with every block. “First rule,” Asher said quietly, not looking at her. “In my home, you speak freely to me. No one else hears your challenges. Understood?” Lina stared out the window. “And second rule?” “There isn’t one yet. You’ll probably break it before morning.” She turned to him then, surprise cutting through her anger. Was that… amusement in his tone? But his face was impassive again, eyes on his phone as he typed something. The SUV turned onto a private drive, gates swinging open to reveal a towering building of glass and steel. Lina’s new prison glittered under the city lights—beautiful, cold, and waiting. As they ascended in the private elevator, she gripped her bag tighter. Whatever came next, she wouldn’t break easy.
