Sera Maddox Drake purposely chooses not to give names to the two main protagonists, and instead refers to ‘Ancilla’ and ‘Magister.’ From the beginning, we’re told that this relationship between the two of them is purely educational and temporary, as the best way to learn is by doing. And yet by the last third of the book, I was still (pleasantly) surprised with where we leave Ancilla... If you’re not interested in magic and philosophy being sandwiched in between some of the hottest scenes I’ve read in recent years, this book may not be for you... I’ll certainly be pulling it back out from time to time, and recommend it to open-mind
