Communal Rejection

James - POV It has been three years since Ella and I broke up, but the pain of her choosing her dragon mate, Darcus, over me still lingers. As an orphan and the last prince of my clan, who was killed by the witches and Warlocks, I find it difficult to fill the void in my life. No clan accepted me to stay in the realm because of my powers, which could disrupt their realm. So, I created my community, Hope, where rogue witches and warlocks find shelter homes and pledge loyalty to me as their clan head. Though I have everything I need, I still miss a lover or mate. I have tried to move on from Ella by meeting other women, but it always ends in disappointment. They either want me for my powers or just for a one-night stand. On the other hand, Ella loved and cared for me, and it is hard to forget that. Despite all this, I am happy for Ella and that Darcus is taking good care of her. However, I try to avoid her as much as possible because seeing her reminds me of when we were happy together. "James," Dave said as he walked in. "What?" I snapped. "Wow, nice to see you too," Dave retorted. "Did you take care of the community's needs?" I asked. "Yes, I did everything you asked. I am a responsible co-leader," Dave replied sarcastically. I sighed, realizing that I had neglected my duty to my community. I needed a break from the magical world, and for the time being, I was focused on finding a human associate to help me with my client's case. "I'm here to tell you, I have lined up an interview for an associate to help you in the human realm," Dave continued. "I'm tired of juggling between the clan and the human world, and my wife has been nagging me for not spending enough time with her." Dave had recently married his mate, and I couldn't argue with his reasoning. It was time for me to put up with a human assistant to help me balance my work. "Strange. You're not arguing. I came prepared with all the questions you could throw at me to prove my point and get my freedom from being your associate," Dave said. "You look after our clan; I get it." I looked at Dave with surprise. "Are you alright? Because you don't like people around you, and you asked me to deal with them, and now you will deal with...?" Dave trailed off. It was irritating to hear Dave complain about the problems I have to face with dealing with a new associate. "If you don't shut up, Dave, I will not let you resign from your post and make you juggle between the Clan and the human world." Dave raised his hands in surrender as he walked towards the exit. I sighed. It would be a pain to teach a new associate how to function, like teaching a baby how to walk. "Geez! I'll take my leave. Before I do, I suspect the Witches Clan and Warlock Clan are plotting something against us," Dave said seriously. "Did you find any leads to their plans?" I asked, more alarmed because I knew they had gone quiet after the former Dragon King's death and Darcus's stepbrother Blair's death. They had complied with the witches and warlocks to slay my clan, which was against the idea of black magic. But the witches and warlocks wanted alliances with demon powers. "Not yet. The spy who sent us the message to be alert as the dark clouds are heading for the Lonely Prince of the Dead Clan is dead," Dave said with a serious face, walking out of the room. I felt relieved. I had no one to worry about. If I had a mate or woman, they would come to attack my weakness first. That's why I couldn't meet the right woman. The intercom beeped. I answered the call from the front desk. "Mr. James Davis, we have a candidate waiting. Should I send her in?" "Yes." I sighed, inhaling a few deep breaths before speaking with a human. After three years, I also separated from my best friend, William, to keep him away from danger. I was glad not to have anyone special to look after. I paused at the door to see a woman who held the aura of a dragon. I stood still, as I could sense the mate bond. "No, I don't want a mate right now when danger is knocking at my door. Why does fate have to choose the wrong time to send a mate into my life?" I growled internally. "Mate…." She whispered as I looked at her gaze like she was staring at me. "You are Dragon Alice." She nodded her head, looking scared. She cringed at me because of my aura. I halted at a distance so she could stop trembling. I had never seen a dragon so fearful; they were always fearless and arrogant assholes that I knew. "How do you know my name? Also, you're not human," she stuttered. "I am a warlock and the Last Prince of the Black Magic Clan. Also, I know the name you mentioned in your interview form," I sighed at her naïve question. Her eyes widened in surprise. "Warlock… So you're James Davis, Queen Ella's ex-fiance," she said. I glared at her for bringing up such a sensitive topic. "How do you know about this?" I asked. "Everyone in the Dragon Realm knows the story about Queen Ella and King Darcus, and I heard you…" she trailed off. "I get it. We have an important question to discuss," I said, cutting off Alice's speech. "I know about the mate bond." Alice said, "I hope we don't accept this bond yet!" I was about to say the same thing to her. Hearing her words, my chest tightened for a moment. What was this feeling? I hated it. "I agree with you; let's not accept the mate bond," I said, and her eyes widened in surprise. I wondered if she felt the same ache I did or if it was only me. But her feelings were not my concern. I needed to keep my distance from her for her own safety. I didn't want to risk anyone's blood on my hands.
