Chapter Nine – Lines in the Sand

1077 Words
Selene woke up before dawn, her thoughts already racing. Sleep had been a fragile, fleeting thing lately, slipping away the moment her mind wandered to him. Maximilian Wolfe. The man was seeping into the cracks of her focus like water through stone. No matter how tightly she held herself together, he found a way in—through words, through glances, through silence. Today would be different. She dressed with deliberate precision—an ivory blouse tucked into a slate pencil skirt, sharp heels, hair pulled into a clean twist. Armor. She would need it. When she walked into Wolfe & Locke’s sleek, mirrored lobby, something was off. The usual controlled buzz of activity felt muted. Tense. It wasn’t long before Ava, her closest colleague, leaned in and whispered, “Emergency board meeting. Something about a leak. Maxwell’s furious.” Selene’s heart dropped, but she didn’t let it show. “What kind of leak?” “No one knows yet. But HR’s already poking around. They’re going through everyone’s communications.” Selene clenched her jaw. Corporate politics were brutal—but this felt different. This felt like war. And she already knew whose eyes would turn to her. Maximilian paced the executive boardroom like a wolf too long in a cage. Someone had leaked sensitive projections for the upcoming merger. Numbers that could tank the deal if competitors got to them first. And while the company scrambled, one name sat at the center of it all. Selene Carter. He didn’t believe it. Not truly. But the timing was too precise. Too convenient. And that was what terrified him most. Because if it wasn’t her, then someone was setting her up—and he had put a target on her back. He hadn’t meant for things to go this far. A few tests. A few pushes. Nothing more. But now… she was in danger. Real, corporate, reputation-shattering danger. He was supposed to keep his distance. He was her superior. The CEO. The man with everything to lose. But when she was called into the room, when she stood there before the board—shoulders straight, voice calm despite the quiet fire in her eyes—he realized something had shifted. He wasn’t going to let her burn. Not for this. Not for anything. Selene sat across from the board, her fingers laced tightly in her lap. They danced around the accusation at first—suggestions, vague questions, professional niceties. Until Maximilian finally stood. “She didn’t do it,” he said, voice cold, final, and terrifyingly direct. “If you want to chase shadows, do it without wasting this board’s time.” The room went still. Selene turned toward him slowly, her expression unreadable. But her heart was pounding. She didn’t know if it was from fear… or something dangerously close to gratitude. The board adjourned quickly after that, muttering amongst themselves, uncertainty thick in the air. As Selene stepped into the hallway, she felt his presence behind her before she heard his voice. “You’re not safe here anymore.” She turned, slowly. “Is that a threat?” “It’s a warning,” he said, stepping in close. “And a promise.” She didn’t move. Neither did he. The silence between them sparked and tightened like a drawn bowstring. “You stood up for me in there,” she whispered, eyes narrowing. “Why?” Maximilian stared at her, something unspoken tightening in his gaze. “Because I don’t know how to stand by and watch you fall.” Selene’s POV She sat at her desk long after the boardroom lights dimmed and the office began to empty. Her fingers hovered above the keyboard, but she wasn’t typing. She couldn’t. Her mind kept replaying his voice—firm, unwavering. “She didn’t do it.” He had put his reputation on the line for her. Maximilian Wolfe, the man she had fought tooth and nail since the day she walked through these glass doors, had stood between her and the wolves. Why? She wanted to believe it was strategy. Calculated control. But the way he’d looked at her—that wasn’t strategy. That was raw. Protective. Personal. And it terrified her more than any accusation ever could. Because if he cared… If he truly cared— Then she wasn’t just fighting for her career anymore. She was fighting herself. And that was a battle she wasn’t sure she could win. Maximilian’s POV He watched her through the tinted glass of his office, the city skyline glowing behind him like a restless heartbeat. He had crossed a line today. A CEO doesn’t intervene like that. Not for anyone. Office Staff POV They pretended not to notice. Pretended not to hear the shift in air every time Selene Carter walked past Maximilian Wolfe’s office—head high, steps sharp, tension shadowing her every move. But they noticed. They noticed the stolen glances, the too-long meetings, the energy that wrapped around the CEO’s floor like static just before a lightning strike. And then today? Today was different. Selene came in late. No smile. No apology. Just those eyes—dark, unreadable, like she was bracing for a storm no one else could see. And Mr. Wolfe? He hadn’t left his office once. Not even when the Crane International files were delivered. Not even when Elias Crane himself showed up in the conference room with that arrogant smirk and eyes that seemed to burn holes in Selene’s back. The interns whispered. The managers watched. HR pretended to care about boundaries. But all of them knew: Something big was coming. And when it broke? They’d either be working in the ruins… Or watching something extraordinary rise from the wreckage. But Selene wasn’t just anyone. She never had been. There was something about her—something infuriating and magnetic. She didn’t flinch. Didn’t beg. She stood her ground even when the floor was breaking beneath her. And it made him want to protect her… and destroy every wall she’d built to keep him out. But protecting her meant exposing his hand. Getting involved. And if he got involved—truly involved—there would be no going back. He took a slow breath, jaw tight. The line between business and desire had vanished. And in the silence of his office, with her name echoing in his mind, Maximilian knew: He’d never be able to stay away now.
