Chapter Two: The Fire and the Ice The hours after the presentation had been a blur. Selene had spent the rest of the afternoon revising the proposal, incorporating Maximilian’s harsh feedback. She hadn’t been able to shake his words, the way his voice cut through her pride with surgical precision. His presence loomed over her every decision, each correction feeling like another test, another challenge she had to rise to. As she sat at her desk, her mind was far from the figures on her screen. She couldn’t escape the memory of his gaze—the way it held her in place, as though he could see every flaw, every vulnerability, and still demand more. When the call came through, she jumped, her nerves still on edge from the morning’s encounter. “Selene,” came the voice of his assistant, Karen. “Mr. Vale needs to see you in his office. Now.” The words sent a chill down her spine. She had hoped for a break, maybe a few hours to regain some composure, but there was no time to hesitate. Taking a deep breath, she stood and made her way down the gleaming halls of ValeCorp toward Maximilian’s office. Her heels clicked on the marble floors, echoing in the empty corridor. She could feel the weight of the company bearing down on her, but more than that, it was the weight of him—the man whose approval, or disapproval, had the power to make or break her career. When she reached his door, she didn’t wait. She knocked twice, then entered without waiting for a response. Maximilian was standing by the large window again, looking out over the city. The sun had dipped below the horizon, leaving the office bathed in the soft glow of the evening lights. He didn’t turn to face her immediately, his attention still fixed outside. It was as if he was waiting for her to make the first move, to show that she wasn’t intimidated by him. She stood still for a moment, collecting herself, before speaking. “You wanted to see me, Mr. Vale?” Finally, Maximilian turned, his gaze sharp and unwavering. There was something different in the way he looked at her now—something darker. It was as though he could sense her every hesitation, every flicker of doubt, and he reveled in it. Maximilian: “Yes, I’ve been reviewing your revised proposal.” His voice was calm, but there was a weight to it. “Better. But not enough. There’s still room for improvement.” Selene fought the urge to grind her teeth. She had spent hours working on this, trying to anticipate every concern, every objection. And still, it wasn’t enough. Selene: “I’ve made all the changes you suggested.” He took a few steps toward her, his footsteps slow, measured. She instinctively took a step back, though she refused to let him see how much his proximity unsettled her. Maximilian’s eyes flicked down to the papers in her hand, his gaze lingering just long enough to make her second-guess herself. Maximilian: “It’s not just about making changes. It’s about seeing the bigger picture, Selene. You’re too focused on the details.” She swallowed the frustration rising in her throat. She wanted to snap, to tell him that she was seeing the bigger picture, but she knew better. Arguing with him wouldn’t help. Instead, she forced herself to hold his gaze, letting the silence stretch between them, thick and heavy. Selene: “What exactly do you want, Mr. Vale?” Her voice was steady, but the tension in the air made her pulse quicken. He stopped in front of her, his towering presence making her feel small in comparison. His eyes were locked on hers, and for a moment, there was no air between them, just a charged silence that crackled like static. Maximilian: “I want you to stop holding back, Selene.” His voice was low, almost a whisper, but there was no mistaking the command in it. “I want you to show me what you’re really capable of.” She couldn’t breathe. His words hit her harder than any critique he had given her. Show him what she was really capable of? What did that even mean? For a fleeting moment, she thought she saw something in his eyes—a flicker of something softer, maybe even... desire? But before she could latch onto it, the moment passed, and he turned away, walking back to his desk without another word. Maximilian: “I expect the revised proposal on my desk by the end of the day, Selene. Don’t disappoint me again.” Her heart was still racing, but she didn’t move. Not until he was sitting behind his desk, his attention already back on the paperwork in front of him. She nodded stiffly, clutching the proposal tightly. Selene: “Of course.” As she turned to leave, she felt his eyes on her again, like a weight pressing down on her shoulders. The door clicked shut behind her, and she let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. She was alive with adrenaline, every inch of her body buzzing from the proximity, from the way he had looked at her. The challenge he had thrown at her wasn’t just about work. It was personal. And she wasn’t sure how much longer she could resist.
