Mia Santos had discovered three important things about Adrian Reyes.
First, he hated being late.
Second, he hated unnecessary noise.
And third—
He actually knew how to smile.
She had seen it twice that week.
Both times, she had pretended not to notice.
Mostly because every time Adrian smiled, something strange happened inside her chest.
Something she didn't understand.
Something she wasn't ready to admit.
It was Friday afternoon when Mia walked into the conference room carrying a stack of documents.
Adrian was already there.
Of course.
He was typing on his laptop, completely focused.
Mia placed the documents on the table.
"Good afternoon."
"You're late."
Mia looked at the clock.
"By two minutes."
"Three."
She stared at him.
"Did you seriously count?"
Adrian continued typing.
"Yes."
"That's terrifying."
He finally looked at her.
"You're becoming predictable."
Mia pulled out a chair.
"And you're becoming annoying."
"I've always been annoying."
She paused.
"Was that a joke?"
"No."
"Adrian."
"What?"
"That was definitely a joke."
He looked away.
Mia smiled.
"I knew it."
Adrian shook his head.
"Can we work?"
"Sure."
Mia opened her laptop.
For the next hour, they worked quietly.
Surprisingly, it went well.
They had stopped arguing over every little detail.
Adrian had started listening to her ideas.
Mia had started considering his suggestions.
Somewhere along the way, they had developed a strange rhythm.
He organized.
She created.
He corrected.
She improvised.
And somehow, it worked.
"That's actually good," Adrian said.
Mia looked up.
"Excuse me?"
"The presentation."
She placed a hand over her heart.
"Was that a compliment?"
"Don't make it a big deal."
"It is a big deal."
"It's just an observation."
Mia grinned.
"I'm going to write this down."
"Please don't."
"Adrian Reyes complimented my work on Friday afternoon."
He gave her a look.
"You are impossible."
"And yet, you keep working with me."
He didn't answer.
Instead, he looked back at his laptop.
But Mia noticed the small smile on his face.
---
That evening, everyone from both teams went out for dinner to celebrate finishing the first phase of the project.
Mia almost didn't go.
She had planned to go home, change into comfortable clothes, order food, and watch an old movie.
But Lena convinced her.
"You need a life."
"I have a life."
"You have a laptop."
"Same thing."
"No."
Before Mia could argue, Lena pulled her toward the restaurant.
When they arrived, everyone was already there.
Mia looked around.
Then she saw Adrian.
He was standing near the window, talking to one of his colleagues.
He wore a dark shirt with the sleeves rolled up.
Mia stopped walking.
Lena noticed.
"Oh."
Mia immediately looked away.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"You were staring."
"I was not."
"You absolutely were."
Mia sighed.
"He's just... different outside the office."
Lena smiled.
"Different how?"
"I don't know."
"Handsome?"
Mia gave her a warning look.
"Don't."
Lena laughed.
"Fine."
They joined the group.
Dinner was surprisingly fun.
Mia told stories.
Everyone laughed.
Even Adrian.
At one point, she noticed him watching her from across the table.
Their eyes met.
Neither looked away.
For a few seconds, the noise around them seemed to disappear.
Then Adrian smiled.
Not his usual small smile.
A real one.
Warm.
Genuine.
Mia's heart skipped.
She quickly looked down at her plate.
Lena leaned toward her.
"You're in trouble."
Mia whispered back.
"Shut up."
---
Later that night, Mia stepped outside the restaurant for some fresh air.
The city was quieter than usual.
She leaned against the railing and looked at the street below.
"Leaving already?"
She turned.
Adrian.
"Just getting some air."
He walked over and stood beside her.
"Too loud inside?"
"A little."
"I thought you liked noise."
"I like my noise."
He smiled.
"That sounds like you."
Mia laughed softly.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Adrian asked,
"Why are you always so happy?"
Mia looked at him.
"What kind of question is that?"
"A serious one."
She thought about it.
"I don't know."
She looked toward the city lights.
"Maybe because life is already difficult enough."
Adrian listened.
"So I don't see the point in making it harder than it needs to be."
He nodded slowly.
"I used to think like that."
Mia turned toward him.
"Used to?"
"Things changed."
"Why?"
Adrian was silent.
For the first time, Mia saw something behind his usual confidence.
Something tired.
Something guarded.
"You don't have to tell me," she said.
"I know."
He looked at her.
"Thank you."
Mia smiled.
"You're welcome."
Their eyes met again.
This time, neither looked away.
Adrian slowly moved closer.
Mia's heart began beating faster.
He looked at her lips.
Then back into her eyes.
For one moment, Mia thought he was going to kiss her.
But Adrian stopped.
He stepped back.
"I should take you home."
Mia blinked.
"Why?"
"It's late."
She nodded.
"Right."
The moment was gone.
But neither of them forgot it.
---
Adrian drove Mia home.
The car was quiet.
Not awkward.
Just quiet.
When they reached her apartment, Mia unbuckled her seat belt.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
She opened the door.
Then stopped.
"Adrian?"
"Yes?"
"Tonight was nice."
He looked at her.
"It was."
She smiled.
"Goodnight."
"Goodnight, Mia."
She closed the door.
Adrian waited until she disappeared inside the building before driving away.
His hands tightened around the steering wheel.
He didn't understand what was happening to him.
He had spent years keeping people at a distance.
It was safer that way.
Simpler.
But Mia was making that impossible.
She made him laugh.
She challenged him.
She made him forget about work.
And tonight, for the first time in a very long time, he had wanted to kiss someone.
He had wanted to kiss her.
Adrian exhaled slowly.
"This is a bad idea."
But deep down, he already knew something.
Mia wasn't a distraction anymore.
She was becoming something much more dangerous.
She was becoming important.
---
The following Monday, everything changed.
Mia arrived at the office with a smile.
She had barely put her bag down when Lena rushed toward her.
"You need to see this."
"What?"
Lena handed her a phone.
Mia looked at the screen.
Her smile disappeared.
It was a photograph.
Adrian.
Standing beside another woman.
A beautiful woman.
The caption underneath read:
"Adrian Reyes spotted with longtime girlfriend."
Mia stared at the picture.
Her stomach dropped.
"Who's she?"
Lena hesitated.
"I don't know."
Mia looked toward the conference room.
Adrian was inside.
Laughing with his team.
She watched him through the glass.
The man who had almost kissed her.
The man who had made her feel something she couldn't explain.
Maybe she had misunderstood everything.
Maybe that moment between them meant nothing.
Mia put the phone down.
"Forget it."
Lena frowned.
"Mia—"
"I said forget it."
She walked away.
Inside the conference room, Adrian looked up.
He saw Mia disappear down the hallway.
Something felt wrong.
He just didn't know what.
And neither of them realized that one photograph was about to change everything.
