CHAPTER TWO.

ESMERALDA’S POV. I got up abruptly, ignoring the blood that oozed from the spot I had forcefully removed the cannula from. I brushed past Dr. Nelson with unknown strength. Running straight for the taxi, I was flagging down uncontrollably, I ignored Kelvin, who was surprisingly waiting outside. He ran after me, grabbing my arms. “What's the matter Es?” He looked down, calling my attention to my bare feet and the hospital gown I still had on. “Let go of me. I have to go, " I begged. “I just found you. Why should I let you go now” he pouted, sincerity oozing from his words. It was too late, I had accepted to have dinner with him. We were supposed to be halfway into something beautiful, but here I was. Living my fear. I decided to scare him off. It was the only way. So I looked at him with bloodshot eyes and thundered, “leave me the hell alone simp”. He gasped, “Es I-I-I'm s-s-orry …did I do something wrong?” Without looking at him, I brushed his hand off mine and got into the cab without looking back, leaving a confused Kelvin behind. I didn't know where I was going, but I knew I needed to clear my head. KELVIN'S POV. I stood there, rooted to the ground. “What just happened?” I thought out loud staring at the moving taxi that left a trail of dust. I couldn't wrap my head around what transpired from the beautiful dinner we were having and the point where Es called me a ‘simp’. No, I wasn't mad. I was troubled. What could be so troubling that she can't share. If only she knew that I wanted to be here for her and let her know how deeply I had fallen for her. Letting her go was not an option. I had spent eighteen months wooing Esmeralda, and I am not going to give up without a good fight. I have known her for about two years. For six months, I had watched from afar before I could summon the courage to go close to her. Es was beautiful. Her straw coloured hair and brown eyes were imprinted in my mind. I had drawn about ten portraits of her, and I was super excited to share my feelings with her. “One americano,” I finally placed an order after sitting down at the diner while staring into space for a while. I needed at least two to keep me agile at work later today. “You have reached Esmeralda, please leave a message at the tone” came the electronic voice as I dialed her number. “s**t” I exclaimed. Remembering how she had left the hospital. “She had probably left her phone at the hospital”. I drove to the hospital. Hoping to get any information that could be of help locating her and at least to know if she had retrieved her phone. “Good day doctor, please I was hoping to ask if Es had come for her phone. I called earlier but it went straight to voicemail” “I haven't seen her, and her purse is still in my office” I didn't want to be pushy or ask any more questions because of patient confidentiality…blah…blah. So, I thanked him and turned around. Determined to find her at all costs. I drove to the diner where I first saw her and have been visiting consistently just to watch her take orders and smile. I met her colleague who was aware of my advances and intentions and she told me where I could find her. Even though it was wrong. I was able to get to her already worried mind. It was Es’ shift but she missed it. “Be careful, she might not be so pleased” I recalled her saying. I drove to the location inscribed on the rusty piece of paper. “Her apartment has a peach door, you can't miss it,” I recalled. I stepped on the porch and pressed the doorbell while taking deep breaths to eliminate the fear I felt. I wasn't sure what her reaction would be. From all my observations, I knew that Es was a no nonsense person. It was possible for her to whisk me away. But I didn't care, I am going to see this to the end. I had punched the doorbell thrice consecutively when the door flung open and an unkempt figure still in the hospital gown and stained with blood and dirt stood before me. Before I could process what I was seeing the door was thrown shut on my face. “Open up Es, please” I pleaded, scared of what might be happening to the woman I love. “Go away” she responded faintly. Ignoring the doorbell, I banged frantically at the door. I listened…But it was silent. My fear grew. My mom was a locksmith's daughter and she had taught me a few tricks. I ran back to my car searching for something I could use. After searching for a few minutes I found my ex's hairpin. It was one she always kept for emergency fashion adjustments. She must have forgotten the last time I had picked her up; which was almost three years ago. I still held on to it , for some weird reasons I hadn't let it go…yet. I held it up as memories of her flooded my head and my heart ached. I shook it off immediately. “Saving Es is top shelf priority” I said loud enough to drown any other thought. I ran back to the door, struggling to open the door with the rusty pin I had retrieved from the car. It was difficult, but I kept going. In a minute I felt the lock give way. “Esmeralda” I called out as I threw the door open recklessly. When I lifted my head, I was scared of the figure before me. It was far from what I had imagined and different from one I saw earlier. My jaw dropped. “What in the world?” I mumbled
