The problem with joining a reading challenge— was that eventually— you started caring about it. Wednesday morning arrived with bright sunshine spilling through the classroom windows. Students chatted as they settled into their seats, and the mood felt lighter than usual. Mrs. Harper stood at the front of the room holding a clipboard. “Before we begin,” she said, “I have an update from the library.” Immediately, several students looked interested. Jason sat up straighter. “If this involves snacks, I’m listening.” “It doesn’t.” Jason sat back down. “I’m still listening.” Mrs. Harper smiled. “The librarian asked me to congratulate everyone participating in the reading challenge. Several students have already reached the halfway point.” A few students exchanged excited glances.
