WE OFFERED HIM a chair, and I said, “As you can see, we’re getting ready to eat. We were just about to order pizza for the twins. Care to join us?”
“Thanks,” he said, “but I’m expected at home for lunch. I just stopped by to tell you that I talked to Lucinda.”
“And?” I said.
“I mentioned your offer, and she said it would certainly help. She was genuinely touched.”
“Consider it done,” I said. “The boys will go home with checks when they quit for the day.”
“I tried to call the number on your card, but the call wouldn’t go through,” he said.
“Up at the top of our driveway we get a half-strength signal on our cell phones,” Mike said, “but down here in this little valley, nothing.”
