MONDAY, WE LEFT the boys in the locker-room changing and headed for the bridges. We finished our run, and when we got to the pool to swim our cooling-down laps, they were still swimming. When we left the building, Mike took the boys to the house, and I went to the office. I stopped by Captain Bridges’ office on the way to mine; he looked up when he sensed me standing in his doorway.
“Geez, boss,” I said. “Your in-basket looks even worse than mine did when I got back from my vacation.”
“You know what they say, no job is finished until the paperwork is complete.”
“Yeah.”
“How are the boys doing?”
“They had a blast at the beach yesterday and voluntarily spruced up our yard when we got home. My neighbor saw them and engaged their services for her yard.”
