In the back alley of the hospital late at night, the dim street lights cast mottled light and shadows on the wet ground. The air was filled with the smell of disinfectant, mixed with the coolness of the night, making people shiver.
Mia rubbed her sore temples and walked out of the back door of the hospital with tired steps. She had changed her white coat and was only wearing a thin coat, carrying a briefcase full of medical records and information.
"It's finally over..." She whispered to herself and looked up at the dark night sky. Today's night shift was particularly long, and several consecutive emergency surgeries almost exhausted her. However, as a surgeon, she had long been accustomed to such a life.
She walked slowly along the path in the back alley. The alley was quiet, with only a few dog barks in the distance breaking the silence of the night.
Suddenly, her steps stopped.
A faint groan came from the depths of the alley, like the painful low moan of some animal. Mia frowned and subconsciously looked in the direction of the sound. There were several discarded cartons and garbage bags at the end of the alley, and the sound seemed to come from there.
"Is anyone there?" She called out tentatively, and her voice echoed in the empty alley.
There was no response, only the faint moaning sound continued intermittently.
Mia's heartbeat quickened a bit. As a doctor, her instinct told her that there might be someone there who needed help. She gritted her teeth and mustered up the courage to walk deeper into the alley.
As she approached, the groaning became clearer and clearer. Finally, she found a figure curled up on the ground behind the cardboard box - no, it was not a person, but a huge gray wolf.
Mia took a breath and took a step back involuntarily. The gray wolf was much larger than she had imagined. Its hair was messy and its body was covered with scars. The most serious one was its hind legs, where a deep wound that could see the bone was bleeding.
The gray wolf seemed to be aware of her presence, and it raised its head suddenly, staring straight at her with golden eyes. Its eyes were full of vigilance and pain, and a low roar came from its throat, as if warning her not to get close.
Mia's heartbeat almost jumped out of her chest, but she did not turn around and run away. As a doctor, she has seen too many injured lives, whether human or animal, she can't turn a blind eye.
"Don't be afraid..." she whispered, slowly squatting down, trying to make herself look less threatening, "I won't hurt you."
The gray wolf's eyes were still alert, but its body was shaking slightly due to excessive blood loss. Mia noticed that its breathing was getting faster and faster, and it was obviously not going to last much longer.
"You need help." She whispered, her eyes sweeping over the wounds on the gray wolf's body, "If I don't help you, you will die."
The gray wolf seemed to understand her words, and the vigilance in his eyes was slightly reduced. A weak whimper came from his throat, like some kind of compromise.
Mia took a deep breath, quickly took out a spare white coat from her bag, and approached the gray wolf carefully. Her movements were gentle and slow, for fear of irritating it.
"Don't move, I'll try to be gentle." She whispered to comfort him, wrapping the white coat around the gray wolf, trying to stop the bleeding on its hind legs.
The gray wolf's body stiffened for a moment, but did not resist. Its eyes were still fixed on Mia, with a hint of complex emotions in its eyes.
"Okay, I have to get you out of here now." Mia whispered firmly, "I can't leave you here."
She looked around, and the alley was empty. She knew that if she was found with a wounded wolf, it would cause a commotion. But at the moment, she couldn't care less.
"Come on, I'll take you home." She said softly, reaching out and patting the wolf's head gently.
The wolf's eyes flickered, and after a few seconds, it slowly stood up, but because it was too weak, it didn't have much strength to support its entire body, so it fell down again.
Mia tried to pick up the wolf and walked out of the alley, but because it was so big, it was panting after walking a few steps. Her car was parked in the parking lot near the hospital. Although the distance was not far, it was obviously not an easy journey for her.
"Hold on, we'll be there soon." She encouraged in a low voice, with a hint of anxiety in her tone.
The wolf didn't respond, its breathing was still rapid, but its eyes were more trusting than before.
Ten minutes later, Mia finally brought the wolf to her car. She opened the door of the back seat and carefully carried the wolf in her arms.
"Okay, we'll go home right away." She said softly, closed the car door, and quickly sat in the driver's seat.
The car started and drove into the street in the night. Mia's eyes swept through the rearview mirror from time to time to observe the gray wolf's condition. Its wound was still bleeding, but it seemed to be slightly more stable than before.
"You will be fine." She whispered, as if to comfort the gray wolf, and also as if to comfort herself.
The gray wolf did not respond, but just lay quietly on the back seat, with his golden eyes slightly closed.
The car drove into a quiet residential area and finally stopped in front of a single-family building. Mia quickly got out of the car, opened the door of the back seat, and helped the gray wolf into the house.
Her home was decorated simply and warmly. There were several medical books piled on the sofa in the living room, and several landscape paintings hung on the wall. Mia didn't bother to change her shoes, and took the gray wolf directly into the bathroom.
"I have to help you clean your wound first." She whispered, taking out the first aid kit from the cabinet.
The gray wolf did not resist and let her do whatever she wanted. Mia's movements were gentle and skillful. She washed the wolf's wound with warm water and then carefully treated it with disinfectant. The wolf's body trembled slightly, but it never made any sound.
"You are very strong." Mia said softly, with a hint of appreciation in her tone.
After treating the wound, she bandaged the wolf's hind legs with a bandage.
It was late at night, and Mia placed the wolf on the sofa in the living room and returned to her room. She lay on the bed, replaying everything that happened tonight in her mind.
"What on earth is it..." She whispered to herself, feeling that this wolf was not simple.
In the living room, the wolf lay quietly on the sofa, its golden eyes flickering in the dark. Its eyes passed through the door, as if it could see Mia in the room.
"Thank you... I will find a way to repay you." It whispered, its voice hoarse and low.
