Young Ben was alternating between bad memories and the peaceful, almost loving feeling he was experiencing being watched over by Heather back at camp. Now they were about ready to leave Horseshoe trailhead for Twisp.
Besides the way Heather had made him feel secure back at camp, Ben had felt safer than he ever had riding behind Roy and his big sorrel horse. He had never had much of a home life and at sixteen was as close to being on his own as a teenager could be, while still living at home. When his mother and father weren’t working, which was most of the time, they argued or were at the Three Aces Bar in Twisp, getting drunk with the other regulars.
