The Red Moon Pack was more hostile than I had expected.
I was left at the edge of the forest and walked into the Red Moon Pack alone. The path was lined by tall warriors who looked down menacingly at me. As a foreigner, I was destined to stick out like a sore thumb.
The guards led me into a large tent, where Caleb’s mother, Mary Weiz, sat.
I was forced to kneel at her feet. She looked at me from above and said, “We rarely marry for alliance in the Red Moon Pack. You know why you’re here, don’t you?”
I nodded and replied, “I’m here to heal Alpha Caleb.”
“You have the blood of an Alpha and your blood is special. You are also a herbalist with special healing skills. Honestly, I’m actually quite pleased with you.” Mary got up, walked toward me, and tilted my chin up with one finger. “Behave yourself, my dear Laurel. Being my daughter-in-law is not an easy task. You have a lot to learn.”
Mary called for one of the maids, Betty, and ordered her to teach me the rules of the pack. I learned diligently and was instructed to take care of Alpha Caleb.
I looked at the young man lying in bed. He had a robust physique, with muscles that revealed his former strength. Even as he lay here quietly, he was still too strong to be taken lightly. His dignity was inherent and when I saw him, I instantly associated him with my father who was far away.
“Why do I have to serve a stranger here?” I sat on the edge of the bed picking herbs and muttered, “Father is also severely injured and I am unable to take care of him. He will be very sad if he finds out one day...”
At this time, Betty gently pushed open the door, and I hastily shut up.
“Miss Laurel, the blood has run out, I’m afraid I need you to give some more.”
I froze when I heard this sentence and it sent chills down my back. These days I kept feeding Caleb with my own blood. His body was so weak that even the herbs potion he drank had to be mixed with my blood to be effective. I kept slitting my wrists and offering my blood to Alpha Caleb. However, while his condition was improving each day, I was getting weaker.
I looked at Betty and asked, “Can you give me a couple of days? I’m feeling very weak now.”
She appeared troubled, hesitated for a moment, and then said, “I have no say in such matters, Miss Laurel, you’d better go ask our Luna Mary.”
I also knew that she had no right to decide. Thus, I heaved a long sigh and gave her some of my blood.
I looked once again at the man lying beside me, his tightly closed eyes seemed to grip my heart tightly. It was suffocating.
Alpha Caleb, I hope you wake up soon so that I can be relieved. I don’t belong here. I belong in the New Moon Pack. I am very sad to be here!
My wrists were already covered with cuts. While some had scabbed, others were barely closed and the slightest movement would cause them to open up and bleed again. After giving him the blood, I did not make it back to my own room. I fainted and collapsed to the ground on my way back.
When I woke up, I found myself lying in Mary’s tent. She was drinking wine, and the sound of the crackling fireplace made me relax and warm up a little.
When she saw me wake up, she slowly placed her glass down and asked softly, “Laurel, how is Caleb’s health?”
I answered truthfully that Caleb’s health was indeed improving, but it would still take some time before he woke up. However, even with my powerful perception and concocting skills, I could not guarantee anything because I had no answers to the mysteries of life. I was only judging by intuition. I did not want to invite trouble for myself by giving false hopes.
After listening to what I said, Mary nodded her head slightly and after pondering for a long time, she suddenly put down the wine glass heavily as if she had decided on something major. “Laurel, I don’t want to wait any longer, the Red Moon Pack needs a strong newborn power. We need this power to maintain the morale of the clan and also to deter other packs in this way. Now you must fulfill your obligation.”
I had a bad feeling and asked softly, “What do you need me to do?”
“Have a child.” She said, “You are married to my son and it is only right that you should bear him an offspring.”
I froze in place for a long time. It was already extremely devastating for me to be forced to marry and come here to the Red Moon Pack. Now I have to bear a child for a man I had never spoken to... I was not even ready to be a mother! Before I came here, I was just a child who my father pampered. I yearned for countless romantic encounters and situations. I longed for my mate and I hoped to find a partner who would make me happy for the rest of my life.
In short, I did not expect my marriage to turn out this way and to be at the mercy of others.
I said to Mary, “How could I have a child with Caleb when he hasn’t woken up yet? Shouldn’t we wait until he is better?”
Mary shook her head and said, “You don’t need to worry about that. I will have the elders of the clan who are good at witchcraft do the work for you. After you take the medicine, the elders will handle the rest. There is no need to have s*x and you will be able to conceive successfully. So, it’s decided.”
I was completely desperate now. I knew very well that once I had a child in my belly, I would definitely be trapped here. Even if Caleb woke up, it would be very difficult for me to return to my pack.
But what could I do?
An old white-bearded woman held up her cane, chanting under her breath as she kept doing a strange dance. She then handed me a bowl of black colored water and told me to drink it. I looked at Mary, and her expression was cold and determined. My last hopes to plea for mercy were crushed.
Ally: Do we really have to drink this stuff? Laurel, I don’t want to resign myself to such a fate.
Me: But what can we do? The Red Moon Pack promised to help our pack if I marry Caleb. If I renege now, we would become their enemies. I don’t want to bring any more trouble to the New Moon Pack... My father’s condition is already very dangerous.
Ally: But we don’t love Caleb...
Me: Love is not a prerequisite for childbirth...
I scoffed bitterly as I tried to convince Ally and myself.
Finally, I gritted my teeth, tilted my head, and drank the bowl of potion. I lost consciousness soon after.
When I woke up again, the first ritual was over. The sorceress, Lara touched my face and said to me, “Miss Laurel, you are in good shape, please endure the ritual.”
I closed my eyes weakly, and when I opened them again, I saw Mary sitting expressionless next to me as if she was used to these kinds of rituals. I slowly crawled toward her feet and asked, “Luna Mary, do I really have to have a baby for Caleb in this manner?” I pleaded. “I swear I will take care of Caleb with all my heart. Every single drop of my blood is dedicated to him... but I don’t want to give birth to a child, yet.”
Mary looked at me deeply and said after a long pause, “Don’t struggle unnecessarily. Laurel, from the first day you married over, you no longer belong to the New Moon Pack. You are now the property of our Red Moon Pack. Do you understand?”
I felt a tear roll down from the corner of my eye. I sensed that this was her final warning. I had to resign myself to my fate.
I returned to my room with a heavy heart and continued to care for Caleb day and night. Betty said that the ritual would last three times, the last of which I would need to mate with Caleb to successfully conceive.
I sat on the edge of the bed, looking at the face I had grown accustomed to but I still had some difficulty accepting that he would be the father of my child.
“Caleb, if I do get pregnant, will you love the baby in my belly?” I mumbled, scooped a spoonful of the potion, and tried to feed it to him.
Suddenly, there was a slight rattling behind me. I turned around thinking it was Betty. However, it was someone with a black hood over the head. I could not tell if it was a man or a woman. However, I immediately saw the wooden bat in its hands. I realized that something was wrong and got up to fight back just as he lunged. I rolled into a ball with the assailant and the potion was knocked to the ground. I tried with all my might to take the bat from it but the assailant was strong and continued to fight with me. I should have been able to easily overpower him but I was now physically weak due to the loss of blood. I was soon at a disadvantage.
My opponent knocked me to the ground and slowly raised the wooden bat...
Just as I was about to close my eyes to absorb the blow, I looked at the man on the bed and saw him looking directly at me.
