The sun was shining, but my mood did not change for the better.
After the humiliating ritual, I was back to being a servant at their beck and call. Betty still asked me to give blood to Caleb every few days. While Caleb’s body was getting stronger and I was getting weaker every day. Mary said I would not any of the privileges until she was sure I was pregnant. Otherwise, I had to continue to do everything to ensure that I conceive.
I could see that Caleb also hated these rituals as much as I did. Not only did he hate them, but he also hated me just as much.
“Alpha Caleb, you need to drink your medicine.” I walked toward him with the bowl of medicine. I had learned my lesson and knew what he might do to me. Now, I just placed the bowl on the table in front of him and then immediately took a few steps back to avoid getting myself hurt.
Caleb scoffed when he saw how I behaved.
“Do you think there’s nothing I can do just because you’re keeping your distance from me?” He suddenly stood up and walked steadily toward me. His tall and strong body was like a solid wall of flesh. I had no choice but to back up until my back hit the wall. I braced myself to prepare for his first blow.
“Please, don’t hit me again...” I almost cried out. My display of weakness drove Ally crazy.
Ally: Laurel, don’t be afraid of him! We’ll fight him to the death!
Me: No, we can’t do that. My father is still waiting for us to go back!
Ally: But he... forget it, I don’t want to argue with you. Laurel, you have to let me out! I will fight this bastard!
Ally was rampaging through my body and I almost lost control of her when Caleb had a death grip on my arm. He seemed to sense that my wolf was getting restless and he smiled coldly.
“What? Do you want to fight me? Do you think that you can defeat me with your strength?”
He lifted his hand and just when I thought that I was about to receive another painful blow, Betty appeared just in time.
“Alpha Caleb, Madam wants to see you.”
Caleb paused, looked at me, then at her. After a long pause, he scoffed and said, “You’re lucky. Laurel, mark my words. You’d better not resist whatever I do to you. Since my mother had forced me to marry you, you must endure everything I dish out, including my wrath!”
I was then violently shoved and fell on my back.
It was only when the footsteps faded away that I finally found my strength and struggled to my feet. Betty came forward to support me and I noticed some sympathy in her eyes. She was the only person here who would look at me these days. Although there was nothing she could do for me, her sympathy gave me a lot of comfort.
“Laurel, are you feeling alright?” she asked.
I shook my head gently and said, “I’m not.” How could I be alright? I left the pack where I had lived all my life and ended up here where I was constantly bullied and beaten. I was in a bad state. I missed my father and my pack. Even if I had to face enormous hardships, it was still better than here.
She probably saw how depressed I was. After a moment’s hesitation, she suddenly lowered her head to my ear and said, “Laurel, I learned that your father has woken up. However, something happened over there in the New Moon Pack. Your father had been forced to follow orders and is living a very hard life.”
I froze and looked at her in disbelief.
“I knew that I should not talk too much but I could not help it. Laurel, that’s all I can tell you. I’ll take my leave now.” Betty took one last deep look at me and left. She left me alone in the room pondering painfully.
My father had woken up... but he was having a much harder life.
He had no more authority and was oppressed by both my mother and sister. He was weak and his health was not what it used to be. He must miss me terribly and in need of my help.
The more I thought about it, the harder it was to control my actions. I knew that I could not continue to be submissive any longer.
Ally: What about it, Laurel? Are we just going to sit back and wait for something to happen?
Me: No... I have to see my father as soon as possible. You’re right, we won’t get anything if we keep compromising.
Ally: Great! That’s the kind of determination I want you to have, Laurel. Don’t be afraid, I’ll stand behind you and do anything for you no matter what. Now let’s start figuring out how to get out of here!
Me: Thank you.
My wolf was still my undying support. I trusted her and love her. I was sure I would be able to leave without any problems.
While Caleb was away, I quickly thought about my next move. The Red Moon Pack was very heavily guarded. If I wanted to leave, I had to figure out the patrol’s route of movement, which was not difficult for me. I had long been collecting this information over the past few days. What I was unsure about were the sentries on the periphery. They were extraordinarily resourceful and almost had the entire area sealed airtight. Unless there was a sudden distraction, I had no hope to escape successfully. However, I heard that they would be increasing the security tomorrow. If I did not try to escape tonight, it would be even harder for me to do so from tomorrow onward.
While I was thinking about it, Caleb came back to the room. I immediately suppressed all my emotions and served him the medicine. I then obediently retreated to the yard to chop some firewood and followed his orders at all times.
He had not attempted to hurt me recently. I did not know what Mary said to him, but I did not care about that right now. I only cared about how to escape.
In the evening, I happened to overhear a passing patrol discussing the sentry’s new defensive scheme. They intend to use hounds to help them defend the pack.
“Those hounds are specially trained. Some of the hidden passages will be mainly guarded by them in the future. If anyone intrudes those areas, they will definitely be chewed up by them.”
“Wow. Those dogs are merciless compared to the sentries. I wonder who will be so unlucky to be the first one eaten by them.”
I was alarmed to hear what the patrol said. Just as I was pondering quietly, a little maid handed me something and whispered to me, “There is a gap near the woods at the valley where six hounds are guarding it. Burn this and its smell will distract them and then you will be able to slip by without any problems.”
She slipped away even before I could see who she was.
I looked down at some strange candles in my hand and was a little confused.
Was she sent by Betty to help me escape? It seemed so. After all, only Betty knew me the best over here. Additionally, she was the one who told me the news about my father. In that case, I could not let her down.
I decided to attempt the escape tonight.
I followed the plan and quietly arrived at a place near the woods where the maid described.
I did see some narrow gaps in the valley. The cold mountain wind chilled me to the bones and my senses were in overdrive.
Howl...
Hounds howled nearby and I was able to pinpoint them. I found that they were all domesticated from wolves and still retained the wildness in their blood. I believed that I would be fine if a couple of them chased me down but any more than two I might be overwhelmed.
Me: Ally, how about it? Let’s take a chance, shall we?
Ally: You know me. I’m right behind you! Let’s do it!
Me: Of course, you are the bravest wolf, I won’t hold you back.
Ally: Then what are you waiting for? Go on! Honey!
I lit the candles given to me by the maid and they emitted a pungent smell that quickly spread all around. The hounds began to behave erratically and started to howl. I took advantage of this chaotic moment to rush toward the gap in the valley with all my strength.
However, I was a step too slow. I had lost too much blood recently and my body was not as strong as before. Just as I was about to rush through the gap, a hound found me, looked up, and lunged toward me.
“No!” I shrieked and began to fight back but my reaction time was clearly no match for the hound. It bit down on my shoulder and nearly snapped my bones.
Ally rushed out of my body and fought it to the death.
Just when I thought I was going to die in a place like this, a strong person suddenly appeared and clutched the hound’s neck and twisted it so hard that blood gushed everywhere. I did not see clearly who saved us. The pain was so intense that I blacked out immediately.
Caleb’s pov.
I am Caleb, the future heir to the Red Moon Pack. Several years ago, I was wounded in a battle and I fell into a deep coma for several years. I emerged from the coma after feeling minute changes to my body.
Before I woke up completely and although I could not open my eyes, I could feel that someone was taking good care of me.
I thought that my mother must have arranged for someone to take care of me carefully and meticulously.
The moment I managed to open my eyes, all I saw was a woman, who I did not recognize, passed out in my room.
I sized her up and when she woke up, she said that her name was Laurel Graves, that she was my wife, and had been married to me for over three months.
This was ridiculous! Preposterous!
I did not want an arranged marriage. I wanted to find my mate and to have this woman as my wife would be an insult to me!
I told this woman, whom I found disgusting at first glance, to go away. However, my mother told me that this woman was the wife she had chosen for me. Furthermore, she insisted that I mate with this woman so that she could bear me a child!
In defiance of my mother’s decision, I said a lot of vicious things but this did not make her change her mind.
My mother insisted on holding the mating ceremony, to which I objected and I began to smash everything.
My heart burned with rage and I was furious when I saw that woman obeying whatever they wanted her to do.
Thereafter, when Laurel served me the medicine she concocted for me, I could not control my anger and began to wring her neck viciously.
Unfortunately, I was interrupted by my mother. Otherwise, I could have snapped Laurel’s neck and she would not be bothering me anymore.
During the last mating ceremony, I lost consciousness after being forced to drink the potion.
When I woke up, my body felt different. When I found out what had happened, I was even more disgusted with this shameless woman.
The only thing I was thankful for was that my body gradually recovered and became stronger by the day.
Every day after that, I would run and train within the pack to get used to my body.
As I was resting at a remote corner of the pack, I overheard some people saying how Laurel had cut her wrist and fed me her blood regularly. It was her fresh blood that got me out of the coma and helped me to recover so quickly.
I could not believe that she was actually my savior!
Before I could digest this news, I heard them whispering that the New Moon Pack was being controlled by Laurel’s mother and sister, and her father was in danger.
I contemplated how badly I had treated her and could not bring myself to apologize to her in person, much less tell her this news.
After returning to my room, I began to observe Laurel and realized that she was not as bad as I had thought before.
About the news, I learned about the New Moon Pack...
I thought long and hard about it and decided to task my subordinates to deliver the news to Laurel.
As expected, she was very anxious to help her father and acted on it almost immediately.
I secretly followed Laurel as she cautiously went to the valley and attempt her escape. Unfortunately, she was discovered by the hounds and was attacked by them.
Laurel appeared unusually weak, most likely because she lacked blood after giving so much of it to me. She soon was unable to resist the hounds’ attacks and passed out.
On seeing this, I had to save her from the hounds.
However, I did not want her to find out that I arranged all this. I placed her in the courtyard and then returned to my room.
