I gave serious thought to taking a weekend trip to Virginia Beach and renting an inexpensive hotel room on the boardwalk. It was off season, so it wouldn’t be too pricey, but then I thought about the uncertainties that came with a new job. What if I didn’t like it, or if the opera singer hated me? Though I had a healthy bank balance due to the generous severance given to me by Thalhimers, I knew I’d feel safer if I could hold on to it as long as possible. I’d never had an emergency fund before, and just knowing the money was there did a lot to calm my nerves. Instead of the beach, I decided to prepare myself for the long hours of the new job.
