Chapter 14

*13 years old Caleb P.O.V.*

I was walking down stairs and followed by a few girls that kept hanging around me. It was annoying but last time I told them to get a life, my father got pretty mad because I shouldn't chase away potential mates. I am thirteen and since I year I started to develop more of my wolf skills. These came with speed, a extra good hearing and sight and strength. I wasn't very muscular but that would also be weird. To be at the beginning of puberty and suddenly be all pumped up with muscle. "Oh.. Caleb? Are you training today?" One of the 'fans' asked. I preferred the term stalker but I wasn't allowed to say that out loud. "Yes I am.. Why?" I asked, not trying to mask my slight irritation. "We were curious.." she answered, not noticing the irritation.

"Hey blind eyes!" A familiar voice said and I smiled. The only girl in the pack I liked: My favorite omega Nadine. We met years ago when she was cleaning the stairs and after two hours of playing hangman and noughts and crosses, we decided to be friends. She just turned twelve a few weeks ago and was allowed to start training. "Good morning Nadine.. How are you?" I asked and put a arm around her neck. I looked at her with a 'help me' look in the eyes and she chuckled. "I'm fine the moment you release me from your arms because you still didn't go to the doctor for that armpit fungus.. did you?" She asked.  Behind us I heard a few 'ew' comments and the 'fan's' quickly walked away. "Not the help I hoped but then again you are not the type to be all girly and in love with me" I said and did take away my arm from her neck. "Of course not, I am very happy with you as a friend.. If we are mates, I'll reject you" she said and I laughed. I knew she was speaking the truth but it still was funny to me. Not one she-wolf would dare to say that out loud but she did. "So.. did you tell you mom that you want to join the training today?" I asked and she shook her head. "No.. not yet.. I think she is pregnant again.. And it would stress her out" Nadine said. Her mother was a Omega, she used to be a gamma from the previous pack but after surrendering she was turned in a omega. I heard men often talk about her for having a amazing body and never understood what they meant until we had class about the birds and the bees. Yes girls! Boys can be clueless too! We walked towards the kitchen, since I started to eat with the pack, the omega's were well fed too. If I skipped a day, Nadine told me they were not welcome anymore.

It was quite against my father's rules that I ate with the pack, but I still did. Further I did follow his rules, this just was one I didn't. I walked to the kitchen with Nadine and we sat together at one of the long tables while the others were already eating. As we walked in, the chatting stopped for a moment and when we sat and had our meal in front of us, the others started talking again. I knew the rumors that went on but I didn't care. "So.. Sibling number how many is on their way?" I asked Nadine and she sighed. "That would be number seven... We were with three when we met and over the last few years she got four more..." she said and I was surprised. We ate and chatted a bit until Jeremy, my father's beta walked into the kitchen. "Caleb.. I had to inform you that.." he said and I held my hand up. "He found another lead and is going to investigate it?" I asked and Jeremy nodded. "I have to take care of you until he is back" he then said and I nodded. "Alright.. I also have a question for you.." I said before he walked away. "Yes?" Jeremy answered, over the years he learned that not all my questions were funny to answer so he was cautious on what I would ask. I simply pointed to Nadine. "I want you to give her a shot at training today.. I know she is a omega but she turned twelve and I can remember that every twelve year old wolf must try out in combat training to see what their potential is" I said, I had been eavesdropping on my father's conversations. "Eh yes.. That is true.." Jeremy answered and I could see he didn't like it. "I would say come to me after you've finished eating and we will give you a try out" he said and I nodded.

Nadine looked at me with a big grin and smacked my arm. "You didn't have to do that.. But.. Thanks" she said and I smiled. "I simply got plans for you Nadine.. Because if you are as good as you say and brag to me.. Then I want you to become my beta... And for that you need proper training" I said and she grinned. "I'll kick your butt Cale.." she said and I chuckled. She sure would if I needed a good kicking. And I actually didn't even mind if she did it yet I didn't feel in love with her.

After breakfast we went our separate ways so we could get ready for training. I went up to my room to put on my standard black training's outfit and grab a towel. Then I went back down stairs where Nadine just walked up to the front door when I took the last steps on the stairs. "Wait for me" I said and she turned around. "Slow poke! Hurry" she said and we jogged to the field for training. Just like always the new members of the group had to go first and from the five, Nadine put up her hand first when Jeremy asked them who wanted to go first. He nodded and got ready, they always had to spar with him and Nadine was ready for it. They fought and I felt really proud, not because I had learned Nadine anything but because she seriously was winning this. I heard several other boys my age but even those that were older react with surprise and I could understand. Even though she had been able to eat much better than before, Nadine was quite slim build and had a lot of hidden muscle. Unlike some of the girls we had in the training group that had muscles and which was showing that they had them. After Jeremy was on the ground for ten seconds, he got up and bowed in respect for her. Nadine smiled and clearly was very happy. ‘’I think you will be a great warrior’’ Jeremy said and I knew for sure she would be.

After all the newbies had been introduced and had sparred with Jeremy, they were put in different ranks in the group. Training started as usual and we ran in our groups around the pack house. After that we sparred and as always Jeremy was extra though on me but I didn’t care. I could handle it even though it did annoy me sometimes. One by one the groups were released from the training, lower ranks trained shorter times because they often had other duties in the pack like cooking or cleaning. I was trained the longest and it was exhausting but I managed and after the last fifty sit ups I got up and also left.

Nadine was waiting for me in the kitchen with a big glass of water which I gulped down in one go. ‘’Got another one for me?’’ I asked after I put down the glass but I was slower than she had been. I took the second glass and this one went down slower than the first one. ‘’Hey, my mom asked if I could go with her for grocery shopping.. Will you come with us? I am sure she is going to tell me she is pregnant because she always does during grocery shopping.. I am too grown up to throw a tantrum in the store she said once and it is true’’ Nadine said and I chuckled by the idea of her throwing a tantrum. ‘’You are not one to throw a tantrum at all... You would only be worried, which I understand..’’ I said and she nodded slowly. ‘’Yeah well.. It is her choice but then again I can understand.. She lost my, Brian and James father and her mate in the big fight years ago.. And since then she isn’t herself.. Well, she is but.. she isn’t at the same time’’ she said and I nodded. ‘’I understand’’ I said to her and smiled. ‘’And I’ll go with you’’ I said and actually liked the rare moments I got to go out of the territory. ‘’Cool!’’ Nadine said and we left the kitchen behind us.

After going to Jeremy to say where I was going, and telling him several times that I would be okay.. The worry warth. I walked with Nadine to her mothers room. ‘’Mom, I got a friend to go with us to the grocery store so you won’t have to carry too much’’ she said. ‘’Oh that is good, thank you dear’’ Nadine’s mother said and looked at me. ‘’Oh.. Young alpha’’ she said and lowered her head. ‘’Nadine couldn’t you..’’ she started and I smiled. ‘’It is okay.. I really like to go with you’’ I said and after she stood normal again, we walked towards the garage. There she took the keys to one of the pack cars and we all got in. During the ride towards the human town and grocery store, Nadine and I played a guessing game for which song would be next. Her mother joined in and she even won the game! But in her defense, it was a station with a lot of old music on it.

We entered the grocery store and each got a piece of the long list of groceries. ‘’We have to get a lot so this way is faster.. Nadine, will you come with me?’’ Nadine’s mother asked and she nodded. ‘’See you later Cale’’ Nadine said and I nodded. ‘’Sure will’’ I said and started to do my part of the list. I walked from one point to the other point in the store until I reached the fruit. I was looking around to find everything I needed when I saw a young girl, I guessed she was about four maybe five years younger hit on her own breaks just in time after she had sprinted from I have no idea where in the store to the fruit department. She looked cute but also very strong as she grabbed a few bags from the roll that was hanging next to the crates. I noticed that I kept looking at her and concentrated again on the things I needed yet I kept looking up. She filled her bags with ease even if she was maybe just eight years old. I walked past the crates and grabbed the things I needed until I was at the grapes. I noticed her and I now could also smell that she was like me... A wolf I mean. That explained a lot. I grabbed a package with grapes when I felt a set of fingers be placed on my hand. I looked up and saw quite pretty green eyes. They were not like my green eyes, mine were darker than hers and I found them pretty. Her eyes I mean. I smiled as she apologized. ‘’It is alright.. Can I help you? That looks a little heavy for a little girl like you’’ I said. I didn’t mean it in a bad way but I saw the look on her face change and even though it kinda looked cute, I could see she didn’t like it that I called her little. She frowned and shook her head. ‘’I can handle myself perfectly’’ she said stubborn and took her hand from the package of grapes. She then took the one next to the one I was still holding. ‘’Bye..’’ She said and walked away with her hands full with bags of fruit. I followed how she walked away and when she was out of sight, I took the grapes and went to search for Nadine and her mother.

I found them at the aisle for bread and cookies and Nadine looked at me. ‘’Got everything?’’ she asked and I nodded. ‘’I believe I do’’ I said and she smiled. ‘’Good..’’ She said and I looked at her mother, raising a eyebrow. She understood what I meant and softly shook her head no. I smiled and she did too. ‘’Mom, can I tell Cale what you just told me?’’ Nadine asked. ‘’Eh.. If he can keep a secret.. Sure’’ she said and I nodded. ‘’Cross my heart and hope to die.. I promise to keep this secret’’ I said and they chuckled. ‘’My mother found her second mate.. He is a gamma and a old friend of my father.. And well.. He asked her to move in with him and told her she had to take us with her..’’ Nadine said and I could see she was really happy. ‘’That is so cool! Congratulations!’’ I said and couldn’t keep my mouth shut from what just happened at the fruit aisle. ‘’ I just walked in to a very funny girl...’’ I said and Nadine started to grin. ‘’Oh tell me’’ She said and I told her what had happened. She laughed  from my story and found it really funny that a girl younger than me, told me she was doing very well on her own. ‘’So much for trying to be a prince charming’’ She joked and I rolled my eyes. ‘’I should not have told you this..’’ I said and we walked to the cash register. After we had paid for all the groceries, we went to the car and started loading in.

While loading in, I saw a women with a young girl get in a car across the street and I nudged Nadine. ‘’That is her’’ I said and she looked up. ‘’Yep, that is a eight year old girl.. Also, she isn’t small for her age, she is average so I guess that is why she got angry with you’’ Nadine said and I rolled my eyes. I didn’t understand women. They wanted to be smaller than their mates so they could wear heels and did everything to look young. Yet if they were small or looking young by nature, it was no good to give a compliment! I decided to drop that thought and went on packing up the car. After this was done, we drove back to the pack and there we unpacked the car with some help of the other wolves.

After dinner I went to my own room, to find a letter that was written by my father on my desk. I knew for sure he had given this to Jeremy before he left and Jeremy had put it on my desk after I went grocery shopping with Nadine and her mother. I opened the letter and read what he had written:

Dear Caleb,

The years went by since we are now living in this amazing pack house and I don’t know if you remember the old house or not. It was much smaller and we had not much territory. I have been busy to expand this and this causes that I am away a lot. I am sorry for this, I really want to be there with you.

The big problem is, this house that we have now, is incomplete without your mother. You know what I think of mates, how I believe they make a men weak but I find out every day it is quite hard to live without your mate. I am now following a lead, like you know and I am not sure if it will lead me anywhere. I’ve never told you what kind of lead I am following. The day we attacked the previous owners of the territory we live on now, the Luna of that pack killed your mother. I have killed her in return but the pack members that are still in the dungeon, do not follow me and I can’t submit them to me as their Alpha. This is because that Luna has given birth to a child before she was killed and that child is alive somewhere.

This child is a danger to us.. To you in particular because if it grows up and comes back, it will be able to take the wolves to his or her command that were originally of the previous pack. And I do not want you to be in danger for the rest of you life. How harsh it my sound, I am trying to find this child.. And once I do, I’ll do with it what his or her mother did with your mother.. As revenge on her death.

I stopped reading because it was too much. I knew my mother had died in the fight but I didn’t know the previous Luna had killed her. I kind of could understand that she wanted to protect her child but I knew my mother would never hurt a baby! I had heard stories about how my mother could be a vicious fighter, one who didn’t hold back. Yet I also remember the time she went for a training in that mode with several pack members on our old territory, also because a lot of rogues attacked us often.

I was three years old and she was in the middle of this training when I ran across the field chasing a butterfly. I ran right past her and one of the pack members was about to launch a attack on her when she growled at him in a motherly way and quickly went to grab me. She picked me up, told me in a stern yet loving tone that I should always watch out and kissed my cheek. She gave me to my grandfather and said that training was over.

I felt bad and ripped the letter apart, I had never understood why my father was so set on finding what he was looking for but now I did. I totally understood now and I would help him where ever I could.
