Chapter 13
Elena Adams
~•~
“Lydia!!!!” I screamed her name as she answered the phone.
“I’m so sorry, Elena… I’ve been really busy, but I’m here now,” she explained herself before I could even confront her.
“It’s fine, I forgive you.” I rolled my eyes even though she couldn’t see me. “Lydia, a lot of things have happened.”
The last time we spoke was when I called her back at the hotel. She had no idea how messy my life had turned.
“Lydia, I am at my mom’s house with her new husband.”
“Really? You left Lucas?” Her voice sounded surprised. “I’m so happy for you, Elena.”
Lucas was such an asshole.
All my friends and family hated him.
“Yes… I did.”
“So why don’t you sound excited? Why do you sound like living with your mom is way worse than staying with that excuse of a man?”
Lydia was really harsh.
I took a deep breath, my fingers tightening around the phone. “Remember the man who took me to the hotel from the bar?”
“Of course, why would I forget him just now?”
I closed my eyes, bracing myself for what I was about to say. “He’s my mom’s new husband.”
Lydia gasped. “What?”
“Yes, Lydia.”
“That’s… insane.”
“Insane doesn’t even cover it,” I whispered. “It’s f****d up and I don’t know what to do.”
“Girl, you need to leave that house as soon as possible,” Lydia replied, her voice climbing an octave with every word. “Or else things will get messier.”
I let out a breath. “You have no idea.”
“What? Did something happen already?” She asked, concerned.
I shook my head. “No, not really. But he heard me while I was moaning his name and touching myself.”
“Oh my goodness. What have they done with my friend?”
I laughed even though nothing was funny. “Please, be serious. I’m in deep s**t here and I don’t know what to do.”
I stood up from my bed and walked over to the window. From my room, I could see the fountain side.
Damien and my mom sat by it.
They had been there for about an hour.
I watched as he stroked her hair, pretending to love her. I didn’t know if I was even angry or just jealous.
But at the end of the day, I knew that my mom deserved better. Damien was a piece of s**t and he didn’t deserve her either.
“Okay, so what did he say when he saw you at his house?” she asked, her voice filled with a mixture of worry and curiosity.
“I can’t even remember… but I confronted him and he said that I’m as bad as him,” I said, turning around and making my way back to the bed.
“Like you’re an equally bad person?”
I nodded. “Yes.”
Lydia scoffed. “But you had no idea who he was, so he has no right to blame you,” she said defensively.
“Exactly. That was what I told him but he claimed that I knew he was married,” I added. “But I had no idea he was.”
The line went silent for a beat.
Lydia was probably trying to process everything or even come up with something to say to me.
I didn’t say anything either.
I wanted her to come up with a solution for me.
“Elena?” Lydia’s voice finally broke the silence. “You need to leave that place. Pack your bags and get your own apartment.”
I blew out a puff of air. “I really wish I could, but I can't. I can’t afford it,” I admitted.
“You didn’t save any money?”
“I didn’t, and you know that,” I replied with a frustrated sigh. “I didn’t think I would be getting a divorce.”
Lydia groaned on the other end of the line. “Okay, fine. It’s just a temporary setback. But you can’t stay there long-term, Elena. You’re already moaning the man’s name. Who knows what will happen next?”
I glanced towards the window again but I didn’t see them because I was sitting down.
“I’ll try not to do it again,” I said in a low voice. “But you need to see this man. He’s hot.”
Lydia laughed. “Your mom has good eyes.”
“Yes, she does,” I said in agreement. “And his son is also fine and attractive. I haven’t seen—.”
“His son?” Lydia gasped.
“Oh,” I murmured. “I told you so many things have happened. His son is also interested in me.”
I could already picture Lydia’s confused face. “Wait… first of all, I didn’t even know that your mom got married again, or even ended her last marriage.”
I laughed softly. “Same here.”
“But that’s beside the point,” she said with a quiet breath. “Why is he interested in his stepsister? Is that even allowed?”
I shrugged. “I don’t know… everything is just so messy and wrong. I wish I could leave, but I can’t go back to that man.”
“Yeah, you can’t,” Lydia responded in agreement. “But you have to find a way to drag yourself out of this mess. Can’t you ask your mom to loan you some money?”
“I don’t think that is a good idea,” I replied without delay. “And I don’t want anything that will make her suspect me.”
“Okay, Elena.”
“They also offered me a job at their company.”
“Damn, it gets more and more interesting,” Lydia exclaimed. “Girl, your life is no longer boring.”
My lips curved into a smile. “You were the one always pushing me to have fun, but now, you’re shocked and reacting like I’ve ruined my life completely.”
“Yes, Elena. I wanted you to have fun, but this is extreme… and dangerous.”
I didn’t miss the hint of worry in her voice.
“I know, I know. I’ll be careful.”
“That’s not enough.” Her voice was stern. “Stay away from them. Especially your mom’s husband,” she warned.
It was so funny because she was the one who advised me to sleep with him. Well, we both had no idea who he was.
“Sure, I will.”
I hoped I could.
