Chapter 2 Elena Adams ~•~ I found myself at the bar, drinking alone and drowning in my sorrows. Lucas confessed to everything, and he told me to my face that he married me out of pity. Out of pity? It wasn’t like I begged him to get married to me. We were both in love, at least, that was what I thought. And I didn’t see any point in waiting after he proposed. So how was it out of pity? Why was he treating me like I was worth nothing after everything we had been through? “Can I have another shot?” I asked the bartender. He hesitated at first, but he eventually passed me another glass. He probably realized that it wasn’t his business and he didn’t have any right to advise me against drinking so much. As I sat down there, my phone started ringing. I pulled it out of my purse and saw my mom’s name flashing across the screen. But I didn’t answer. I didn’t want to tell her about what was happening. She would only gloat and remind me of the time she advised me against marrying Lucas. I turned off my phone when she kept calling persistently. After a few more shots, I decided it was time to leave the bar. When I stood up, it felt like my head was spinning and everything was blurry. I pressed a hand to my forehead, trying to steady myself. But as I took a step forward, my knees weakened and I was falling backward, but a firm hand caught my arm before I could hit the floor. “Easy.” The deep voice was calm, compared to the chaos that was going through my head. I frowned, trying to focus my vision. “I’m fine,” I mumbled, even though my body said otherwise. “You didn’t need to hold me.” “Right,” he said dryly. “That’s exactly what someone who’s about to collapse says.” “I said I’m fine,” I repeated firmly, attempting to pull my arm away. But that was a bad idea. The moment he let go, my balance faltered again, and I stumbled right into him. He let out a soft chuckle. “You see.” I didn’t say anything else. I just stayed in his arms while I tried to regain my balance. I couldn’t even see properly. But his chest was solid, warm, and smelled faintly of expensive cologne. I wondered who he was. “How many shots did you have?” He asked after a while. I began counting with my fingers even though I had no idea how many shots I’d taken. “I don’t know,” I finally replied. “But it was enough to forget my husband’s face.” “Husband?” He repeated slowly. “That’s interesting.” “Not really,” I muttered under my breath. He paused for a while. “Do you want to follow me to my hotel room?” It was then that I finally opened my eyes fully and turned to look at his face. I wanted to see the kind of man who would ask me that kind of question on the first meeting. He didn’t even know my name. I was shocked when I saw his face. He looked like he was in his late forties, but he still cleaned up nicely. I dragged a hand down my face and forced myself to stand upright. “I should follow you to your hotel room?” I asked, in case I had heard him incorrectly the first time. He nodded. “Yes... You look like you could use some distraction. And maybe someone to talk to.” My pulse began racing. I wasn’t thinking properly anymore. “W—what kind of distraction are you talking about?” I asked, staring at him in anticipation. “Do you need me to tell you?” I already knew what he meant. A low breath escaped my lips. I wanted to say no. But when I thought about everything that had happened with Lucas—all the humiliation and betrayal even though I’d been loyal to him for years—I couldn’t say no. “Yes, you need to tell me.” He smirked. “Okay… I want to f**k your husband out of your system. And maybe you can tell me about your problems when we are done.” His words sent a shiver down my spine, and for a moment, the alcohol in my veins mixed with something far more dangerous. I felt a desperate need to be wanted. I stared at him, my heart hammering against my ribs. He was older, but he still had a quiet and commanding confidence that Lucas could never have. His blue eyes didn’t waver. There was no shame or hesitation in them. Just a blunt and unapologetic offer. “You don’t even know my name,” I continued, my voice barely audible. “Why would you—,” “What is your name?” He interrupted me before I could finish my question. “Elena… Elena Adams,” I answered without hesitation. I had no idea why I did that. “Okay, Elena. I know your name now. Is there any other issue?” He asked smoothly. “Can we go to my hotel room now?” “Emm… I—I…,” I stuttered as I struggled to come up with a response. “I’m offering you one night where you don’t have to think about him. No strings attached. We don’t have to see each other after we are done.” My mouth went dry. Part of me, the loyal wife I had been for years, screamed that it was wrong and reckless. But the other part that was still hurt from Lucas’s confession, whispered that I deserved this. “I’ve never done anything like this,” I admitted, my cheeks burning. He stepped forward, closing the distance between us. “Good,” he replied calmly. “Then it’ll be memorable.” I swallowed hard as he took my hand. “Come with me,” he added, gesturing at the door. I nodded. “Okay.” As we walked away, a question lingered in my mind. Was this really the answer to my problems, or just another mistake I would regret in the morning?
