Chapter 8 Elena Adams ~•~ My mom texted me to say she was going out with some friends. So I guessed I was alone in the house with Damien. When I heard a noise outside my new room, I decided to check to see who it was. But by the time I opened the door, he was already walking away. A part of me wanted to ignore him and go back to the room, but I’d been meaning to have a conversation with him about our situation. “What were you doing here?” I asked sharply. Damien didn’t turn around immediately. He paused for a moment. I could hear the breath he released before finally facing me. “Do I need to explain to you what I was doing in my hallway? In my own house?” Cocky. But I wasn’t surprised. I didn’t hold back a scoff. “Yes… What were you doing in front of my room? Why were you lingering around?” I asked, leaning my back against the doorframe. “I don’t owe you any explanation.” Of course, he wouldn’t admit that he spent a while contemplating whether he should knock on my door or not. “You do. You owe me a lot of explanations.” “Your mom asked me to check up on you.” I tilted my head. “Really? My mom?” He nodded. “Yes. You heard me correctly.” I stood up straight. “Now let’s talk about my mom. Why the hell are you cheating on her?” I asked, my voice filled with anger. “Is that how you go around sleeping with younger girls?” Something dark passed over Damien’s face, but it wasn’t guilt. It was a cold amusement that made my skin crawl. He took a few steps forward, closing the distance between us. I let out a shaky breath. Watching him stand so close to me brought back memories that I’d been struggling to suppress. But I forced myself to stay still. “Younger girls?” He repeated the words like they were a joke he had heard a thousand times. “You don’t know a single thing about me, so think carefully before you speak.” That sounded like a threat. He didn’t have the right to threaten me after what he had done. “Oh, please,” I continued, acting unfazed even though a part of me was already scared. “You can’t cheat on my mother and act like I’m just making baseless accusations.” He was silent for a while, looking at me intensely. “How about you? Why did you sleep with your mother’s husband?” My lips parted and I blinked. Was he trying to flip it and make me look like the bad person? “I had no idea you were married to her.” “Oh, so you have no problem sleeping with other people’s husbands. You only draw the line when it comes to your mom.” I felt a hot surge of adrenaline hit my chest. The audacity of this man. “I had no idea you were married, and I don’t sleep with other people.” He scoffed. “Oh, please.” His voice was dripping with mockery. “Are you really going to act like you didn’t see my wedding ring?” I was tipsy. The last thing I would even pay attention to was his fingers. If I had known he was married, I wouldn’t have given in to his temptation. “I didn’t see your ring. Maybe I just assumed that a married man wouldn’t sleep with a stranger whom he had just met at the bar.” Damien’s jaw tightened, the only sign that my words had actually landed. But his irritated expression disappeared as quickly as it had appeared. “Are you judging me right now? You’re also a married woman who slept with someone she had just met.” I gritted my teeth in annoyance. Most of the men who existed were such assholes. If Lucas hadn’t cheated on me, I wouldn’t have found myself at that bar, or even thought about sleeping with someone else. Besides, it wasn’t intentional. And I didn’t plan on staying with Lucas after doing something like that. “It’s different and you know it…” The rage in my chest felt like it was going to make me explode. “Different?” He repeated, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low rumble. “Explain to me Elena, how is your betrayal lighter than mine?” Before I could say anything, he took another step, invading my personal space until I was forced to press my back harder against the doorframe. “Is it because you were hurt? Because your husband was an asshole? Does that make you a saint when you’re under a stranger?” His hot breath fanned my face. “You didn’t only betray your husband. You betrayed your mom.” “Ex-husband,” I corrected him. “And I didn’t betray my mom. I wouldn’t have had anything to do with you if I knew who you were.” “Yeah, right,” he said with a mocking scoff. “You don’t believe those words, right?” I scowled at him. “What kind of daughter would I be if I intentionally slept with my mom’s husband?” “Stepfather, you mean,” he said, his voice edged with something close to satisfaction. “And you’re the kind of daughter who already knows that the stranger she slept with is her mom’s husband but still wants him.” My breath caught in my throat. Why did he sound so confident? I swallowed hard, forcing a scoff even though my pulse was already racing. “You’re delusional.” “Am I?” he murmured. For a second, his eyes dropped to my lips before returning to my face. And that movement sent heat crawling up my spine. Fuck. I straightened, refusing to let him see any crack in my composure. “You think too highly of yourself.” His face twisted into a dangerous smirk. “No… I just pay attention. I saw the way you looked at me while we ate.” I hated his guts. “Let me make something very clear,” I said, my voice sharper. “What happened last night was a mistake. And it’ll never happen again.” Did I really mean those words or was I lying to myself?
