Chapter 6: The Meeting

671 Words
The following day, April found herself standing in front of The Langham Huntington Hotel, staring up at the massive, ivy-covered façade of the building. The hotel’s grand entrance was flanked by towering columns, and the ornate doors stood open, welcoming guests inside. The hustle and bustle of the rehearsal dinner filled the air as families and wedding planners rushed to make last-minute preparations. April had dressed in a simple yet elegant black dress that clung to her curves, accentuating her toned body. The dress was understated but classy, the deep neckline drawing attention to the elegant line of her shoulders and collarbone. Her hair was styled in a soft updo, a few loose strands framing her face. As she walked into the hotel, her heels clicking against the marble floors, she couldn’t help but feel a wave of nerves. She made her way to the restroom to freshen up before the dinner, her heart pounding in her chest. The sound of muffled voices and laughter echoed through the hallway as she entered. She paused for a moment, the sound of an unfamiliar voice reaching her ears. It was Hayden Achibold. He was speaking softly to someone, his voice rich with warmth—a stark contrast to the cold, reserved man she had been warned about. April hesitated, but before she could step out of the restroom, the door opened, and Hayden entered. His sharp blue eyes met hers immediately, and for a moment, the world seemed to slow down. He was stunning—tall, broad-shouldered, and impossibly handsome. His dark black hair was styled in a way that looked both polished and effortlessly tousled, and his suit, a deep charcoal grey with subtle pinstripes, hugged his frame perfectly. The jacket fit him like it had been tailored specifically for his tall, muscular build. The deep blue of his tie matched the color of his eyes, and he had a confident, almost magnetic presence. Hayden stood near the entrance, his sister by his side. His sister, Rebecca, was a striking woman, her features sharp and beautiful, with long dark hair and dark eyes that mirrored her brother’s. Maria smiled warmly at April, offering a friendly, welcoming gesture. But Hayden’s expression was cold, his lips pressed into a thin line as he regarded April. “Miss Perez,” he said coolly, his voice rich but distant. “I’m Hayden Achibold.” April nodded, her own nerves getting the better of her as she shook his hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Hayden,” she said, her voice steady despite the fluttering in her stomach. There was an awkward silence between them as they walked toward the dinner hall, the tension palpable. The grand ballroom was filled with guests, the air thick with the chatter of families mingling, the clink of silverware on fine china, and the soft hum of the string quartet in the background. The room was opulent, with crystal chandeliers casting a soft glow over the white-clothed tables, and elegant floral arrangements in the center of each. As they sat down to dinner, April couldn’t shake the feeling that she didn’t know the man sitting next to her. Hayden, with his cool demeanor and reserved personality, was nothing like Carlton. Nothing like the man she thought she would marry. And yet, in some strange way, the weight of their arrangement felt like fate. She was about to marry this man, whether she was ready or not. As the evening wore on, April found herself lost in thought, trying to come to terms with the reality of what was happening. She had never imagined that her life would unfold like this, with a marriage built not on love, but on business. But the more she sat next to Hayden, the more she wondered if maybe, just maybe, their partnership might evolve into something more—something real. But for now, all she could do was endure the dinner, the awkward silences, and the weight of her decision. Tomorrow, everything would change.
