Chapter 13: Humiliation 1

1208 Words
Ava's POV The second I stepped through the opaque glass doors of the Langston Hotel, the air changed. The chandelier above me glittered, dripping with wealth. I walked on the red carpet rolls beneath my heels. My spine straight. I didn't want to come to this gala night. It has never been my thing. I hated parties or galas or most things the rich and upper class do. The fact that they are in competition to see whose clothes are more expensive and s**t, that wasn't me. The whispers started before I even took ten steps into the hotel. I am used to this but for some reason the whispers affected me more. Maybe it's because of the frustration I've been having since this month. I was on the verge of giving up on myself and the company. I lack sleep these days. I had nightmares of Caleb taking over the company while I watched and was mocked. "Isn't that the illegitimate daughter?" A woman's voice, sharp as crystal, cut through the low hum of chatter. She didn't even try to keep her voice down. I heard it loud and clear. "My mum says the b***h has this fantasy of running Morales Tech. She actually thinks she can. That's pitiful." The voice was no other than Shea's, Felicia's friend's daughter and a friend to Vanessa, Caleb's girlfriend. In a normal circumstance, all their insults and word stabs wouldn't have hurt me. I would've just smirked and walked with confidence radiating all over me. But the pressure that ran through my blood made it hard to do so. I still tried my best. With a neutral face and composure, I walked straight to the bathroom. I grasped the sink tightly and stared at my broken self in the mirror. My chest tightened but I forced myself to breathe. One. Two. Three. Breathe. Pull yourself together, Ava. They want me to crumble, to falter under the weight of their disgusted stares and whispers. I won't give them that satisfaction. Never. "Poor thing." I heard giggles and f**k me, please. It can't be who I think it was. I rolled my eyes and turned. Of course, Vanessa and her two friends glide in. Tonight wouldn't have been complete without them and I'm so sure she was the one who stirred up the whispers when I arrived. Caleb's arm candy. She's draped in a scarlet dress that clings to her body. Her lips painted in the same shade, her eyes glinting at me, satisfied. Again, I breathe. In. Out. Looking as nonchalant as ever, I face her. My hands crossed over my chest. "Hello, Vanny." I call, smiling with satisfaction as the muscles in her jaw tick. She hated when I used that name on her. We had a very special memory we shared and whenever I call her that name it reminds her of something. There's a secret of hers I hold dear in my heart. And she knows so well that if I let it out of the box, she's doomed. Her entire elite life is doomed. I smirk at her discomfort. But of course, she shrugs. Maybe she thinks I can't do what I threatened to do. Oh well, she doesn't know me. I will give her all the chance now to mock me and do as she pleases. "Well, well," She said, walking majestically in her five inch heels. She eyed me from up to down before her reflection met mine in the mirror. Her smile was venomous. "Look who thought she could play princess tonight. I wasn't expecting to see you here. I really do admire your strengths and facades in not leaving Morales Tech for my fiance." "Fiance?" She feigned a surprised look. "Yes. Caleb is my fiance now. You didn't know?" She gasped. "I told your brother to tell you. That man! He must've forgotten. Well, I wouldn't blame him. When I said that, we were about to have the greatest orgasm of our lives." "The greatest orgasm of your lives? Hmmph" I snorted. "If you were having the greatest orgasm of your lives, you wouldn't have thought of him telling me about your engagement. If one was having the greatest orgasms of their lives, nothing I mean , nothing would've been on their minds while they were at it, right?" She sneered. "How would you know? I mean, we all know that you are still as virgin as ever. You don't even know what orgasm is, what it feels like when you are about to c*m. You've always been a Virgin Mary." She looked towards her friends. "Isn't that right, girls?" They all laughed. High-pitched and in that elite way that irritated me. I continued. "I can only think of two reasons why you thought of me when you were having the greatest orgasm of your life. And number one is that, maybe—just maybe— my brother isn't satisfying you in bed." I taunted while circling her this time. She looked at her friends again, before looking at me. Her face showed a little nervous expression that she tried to hide. Her voice was low now. "How could you say that? You brother gives me the best—" I cut her off, "Number two, maybe you have someone else in your mind while my brother f****d you." Her friends gasped. Vanessa's expression was priceless. I smirked. Her eyes narrowed. "You!!!" As much as I loved giving her the hippy gippies, I needed to go get myself a signed contract that might save Morales Tech. That's after all the only reason I came for this gala. "Alright girls, this was fun and all. Please permit me to take my leave." Vanessa looked like she lost her tongue and all words she had been taught vanished. There was this bitterness on her facial expression that tells me she's terrified and knows deep down —even though she tries to shrug it off—that I might be a threat to her and all she's worked to climb up this social ladder. Shea snickered, knowing now that Vanessa couldn't say nothing to defend herself. They all know that I knew Vanessa's little dirty secret right from time and they still dare try to step on my toes? "No matter what you do, wear or say, you will never belong. You will always keep being that illegitimate child that will never amount to anything." I smiled sweetly, already bored. I haven't had their time yet and when I do… but first, let my brother get married to Vanessa and let her show her true colours to him before I take any step. For now, let me keep taking baby steps towards my revenge on them all. All they've done to me from high school to this point. They will all pay including Alexander. "We will see about that, dear Shea." I jabbed, and with one last look at them I walked out of the bathroom. My heels clicked against the tiles. My pulse still a storm. My hands start to tremble, but I curl them into fists. My nails dig deep into my palms and I hope it doesn't break or make my hands bleed.
