Cooper’s POV (cont.) :
I tried to mindlink my father while I was walking to his office. My suspicions were correct, I couldn’t reach him. He is probably answering mindlinks from a lot of people. It’s better for me to speak directly to him, anyway. I prefer that because I can watch the other person’s face the whole time I am talking, and assess what is going on in the other person’s mind. Of course, my father was the one who taught me how to do that, as well as how to protect myself from it.
I saw his stoic face as soon as I entered his office. Everyone turned and looked at me in silence. Then I realized I had neither knocked or waited for him to allow entry. I hesitated for a second, and turned to him, “Alpha, I apologize for the intrusion. I want to offer the services of myself and my staff”. My father regarded me for a moment, and then nodded. He turned back to the table where he and the rest of his men/women were gathered. They were contemplating over a huge map on a screen on a desk that one could draw on, and used it to plot their plans. Cooper saw the places where the rogues had gotten through the border circled in red.
I looked around the room and saw faces that were the parents of my friends, some had known me since I was born. I also see legendary giants, trying not to show fear, but it happens. Some packs don’t think it necessary to train pack members because the warriors do the defending. My father and I believe that every pack member should learn some type of self defensive and offensive fighting. No one should be left like a sitting duck if the enemy breaks through and all other warriors are busy fighting elsewhere from their location.
My father called my name. Of course I choose this exact moment to get stuck in my thoughts. He was giving me a pointed look, so I gazed at him in return. He paused, and looked like he was going to lecture me, but he decided to move on, because he started speaking again. “Cooper, could you please have Thomas and Desmond help with beefing up defenses around the border. I will need you and Gregory to keep an eye on things in town. If anything happens unexpectedly, it will make me feel safe in the thought that you are here protecting them”, he said with a gentle voice.
I nodded my head and smiled, “Right away father”. Re-assuming my previously serious face, I turned to leave, about to open mindlink, when I heard something that made me stop in my tracks. I heard my father’s voice, “We might need to call in some help from the packs with whom we have treaties. If this persists, I might have to call Alpha Maxwell”. I spun around, and asked, “Do you think that is wise, Dad, to call them for help?”. He looked up, annoyed and surprised at being questioned, “Why? Do you know something I don’t?”. I felt foolish all of a sudden, “No, sir. I was just thinking maybe…um, we wait until Gabby has spent more time with Future Alpha Daniel?”. I pulled out the last part just so I wouldn’t look foolish for questioning my father’s actions.
My father looked pensive, “That is something to consider, Cooper, but all the same, we need to call the other packs so they can be on alert”. I just nodded, looking like I was agreeing with everything my father was saying when, in reality, I was trying to buy time to think. I do not trust Danny Ravenwood. As if he would show up just in time to save us! I don’t want him anywhere near my pack, but I needed to trust and show respect for my father at the moment. So I nodded and responded, “Yes, father, that is the most prudent action at the moment. Thanks, Dad”.
I left to mindlink my men and get going to my assigned post. I wonder when my dad would be contacting the other packs to advise them of the rogue situation.
Danny’s POV:
I woke up late this morning. The only reason I got up when I did was because Jaycie had called asking how the date with Gabby went. I was in such a dreamlike state when I got home last night, I forgot to set my alarm so I could go for a run. Maybe I can find some time later. My wolf has a lot of pent up energy from last night’s date with Gabby. I guess he’s a little frustrated, too. Not that I want her to rush to give away her virginity. Then I had a thought. It is a possibility that she isn’t a virgin, although I suspect she is. Still, I didn’t want to assume something without confirmation, seeing as how much a disaster it became the last time I did.
Someone was coming through my mindlink, ‘Danny, come to my office, please’. I answered immediately, ‘Sure thing, dad’. I quickly jumped in the shower, got dressed, and walked into my father’s office eight minutes after he called me. My dad looked up from his desk, “Oh, Danny, there you are. I just received a phone call from Alpha Matthew of Dark Moon Pack”. My stomach dropped through the floor, and I immediately felt sick. I must have paled, too, because Dad’s face grew alarmed and he quickly said, “Everything’s fine! There is just a matter that happened of which we needed to be made aware”. I calmed, but I still felt something was up. I continued watching my father as he explained, “Listen, Danny, I need you to listen to me until the very end, okay? There has been a rogue attack over at Dark Moon. Neither Gabby nor Jaycie was anywhere near the action. They are both fine”. I was quick to ask, “So he needs help? Warriors, or equipment-”. My father cut me off, “No, he was just making us aware of the situation as a pack. As Jaycie’s father, he assured me that she and your mate are safe”.
I wasn’t sure how to proceed. If I start to act like a possessive Alpha and go to get my mate and sister and bring them home, I knew that would not fly. Although, if I just sat back and didn’t react, that would not go over well. It would seem like I didn’t care. Somewhere in between would probably be the way to go.
I called Gabby, because I had spoken to Jaycie earlier, and she would not want to leave Cooper. The only way to get Jaycie out is to get Gabby out, too. And yeah, I miss my mate, and I want to hear her voice. The phone rang a few times, and I started to worry. Gabby picked up on the next ring,
Gabby: Hello?
Danny: Hi baby. I guess you’ve learned today that the legend of your beauty has gotten out, and now rogues are trying to break in to see it for themselves?
Gabby: (laughing) Danny…
Danny: What?
Gabby: I have been perfectly safe. I know you’re worried.
Danny: Gabby, I just got to a good shaky ground with you, and I do not want you to be in any danger. It would kill me if anything happened to you. I would lose my mind and then my life. Could you please come here while it is still a problem there? You will have your own room. I know you are perfectly able to handle things on your own, but I am not strong enough to lose you. Please Gabby.
Gabby: I know what you are doing, and I appreciate it. Listen, I still feel safe here, but if it will make you feel better, I will agree to stay there for a few days, or a week.
Danny: (sighs in relief) Thank you baby girl. I will send a car with security to you tomorrow, okay? Oh! Could you ask my sister if she wants to come here for safety?
Gabby: Okay. Bye baby.
Danny: Good night, my sweet girl.
I don’t know what Cooper’s reaction will be, but I can only assume it won’t be happiness.
