Prologue

It was a bright, sunny day, the birds were chirping happily and the sound of Mr. Patty's dog was calming Anne for once. Anne stretched her arms above her head with a wide smile on her face, she then proceeded to stretch out her legs and let out a big yawn. Anne laughed at her own silliness as she wiggled her toes. She was content and happy after all it was her seventeenth birthday. Finally, Anne decided to get out of her bed. She skipped her way to her bathroom like an excited little girl on a Christmas Eve. Anne stood in front of her bathroom mirror which was misty because of the hot shower she just had, a towel wrapped around her petite frame. Anne wiped the mist off of the mirror and sighed happily when she saw her reflection. Her blonde hair tumbled over her shoulder in waves and her blue eyes shined with glee. Anne did her daily morning routine and got ready into a purple, floral dress. Purple was her favourite colour. Anne sat on the little seat that was placed in front of her vanity table and brushed off her blonde hair. After contemplating what hairstyle she wanted to do, she finally braided her hair and applied a thin layer of lip gloss on her rosy lips. Anne wasn't a big fan of makeup. After checking herself in the mirror for one last time, she decided that it was time to face her mother. Anne descended the stairs and ran to the kitchen, excited to greet her mother a good morning. "Good morning, mother dearest!" Anne said in a fake English accent. Her mother was startled by her voice, she had a horrified look on her face and Anne noticed that the kettle on the shelf was shaking as if an earthquake had come. Mrs. Thompson, Anne's mother, hadn’t surprised Anne with her horrified look because Anne was quite used to it. Her mother always gave her this kind of frightened look whenever Anne entered a place where her mother was alone as if her mother had been caught stealing a diamond necklace. What different that day was that Anne saw the kettles shaking without any reason…..without a touch! "Mom, I said good morning! Are you alright ?" She said putting a hand on her mother’s forehead as if checking for a fever. "Yes! I am alright. Good morning Anne and a very happy birthday to you." Mrs Thompson said with a fake smile plastered on her face. Anne knew it was fake, she knew her mother like the back of her hand. "Thanks mom."Anne said and pulled her mother in for a tight hug. "So how’re you goin’ to spend your day dear?" Mrs. Thompson asked. "Um…nothing special mom. I was just thinking about calling Rose over to my place and about having a small dinner with you and Rose." Anne said with a shrug of her shoulders. Rose was Anne’s best friend, her partner in crime and all that jazz. "As you wish!" Mrs. Thompson said and patted Anne on her cheek. "By the way mom, where is my letter ?" Anne asked, looking around the kitchen for her letter "Letter?’’ Mrs. Thompson tilter her head to the side, confused. "Yes. Grandma sends me a letter on each birthday of mine. Where is it?’’ "She seems to have forgotten this time.....o-old age…you..you know." Her mom stuttered as if she was hiding something. "Mom she never forgets my birthday, no! I guess something’s wrong with you today. By the way am leaving for school and remember I want that letter by the time you come back ok." Anne said and kissed her mom on the cheek. With that Anne walked out of her house and closed the door behind her.
