BRIAR’S POV
I’m barely able to catch up to Tavian, his long, swift strides taking him out of the hall room seconds before I can leave. By the time I reach the doorway, he’s completely disappeared.
My eyes dart around, searching both sides, but I don’t see him. I look to my left again, and what was once an empty hallway is now occupied by Deborah, standing uncomfortably close.
I shriek, flinching away from her sudden appearance, clutching my chest as though my heart might burst through.
“You need to stop doing that—popping up out of nowhere on me. My heart can’t take it.”
I’ve considered putting a bell on her, but I figure she’d find a way around it, moving silently even with one attached. It’s like she has no footsteps, like she’s levitating until she reaches her destination.
