Daisy stood with her hands clasped at the front and her eyes fixed to the ground. She was drained and already feeling faint; she didn’t know how long she could stay upright. The pain in her heart felt like it was translating into physical pain.
“Daisy, I do not enjoy doing this. I have no hate in my heart against you, but your father has brought this upon himself and his household. Be glad that out of fondness for you, your life has been spared, but I still have to ensure that justice is served.” Alpha Charles said with a tinge of regret. Daisy raised her head finally and looked him straight in the eye. She couldn’t believe that he was treating her like this. Barely 2 days ago, she had dinner at his table and laughed with Luna over the antics of some members of the pack. How could everything have gone so wrong so soon? His stern voice snapped her back to reality.
“It is important to uphold the integrity of our pack and pay for the dishonour of your father. Therefore, it has been decided that you, Daisy Rain, will be demoted to the rank of omega. As omega, you have been given the opportunity to reflect on your fathers' actions and redeem yourself through service and obedience."
His tone brooked no arguments, not that Daisy intended to argue with him. She lowered her head again and tears flooded her eyes, but she blinked them back.
He instructed one of his men to take her out of the beta house and drive her to the cottage on the outskirts of town. She didn’t protest, she didn’t move either, she just stood there staring and trying to understand the nightmare that had become her life.
The man grabbed her elbow and propelled her forward. Daisy stumbled along and allowed herself to be dragged away. She looked back at Alpha Charles, and he averted his gaze. Maybe he was finally ashamed of how he had treated them, maybe he would look at her one last time and decide that this had gone on for too long and ask them to stop. But no, he looked away and let them drag her away.
Rage filled her heart and threatened to spill like bile. Daisy stood outside what used to be her home and looked at it one more time. They didn’t deserve this!
She looked around her, people should be outraged by this. Every member of their pack who is not an infant knew the Alpha was just a figurehead. Her father had been heading the pack in his stead for as long as she could remember.
Alpha Charles had always been a coward who could not even be trusted to make good decisions for them. Every wise decision taken had been her father's idea; he had served his alpha loyally until today.
Why was he suddenly a traitor? How are people not even reacting to how unfairly they have been treated? What was that sham of a trial that had been carried out earlier? He didn’t even stand a chance of defending himself.
She noticed that people were avoiding her gaze and pretending not to know what was going on. Some were even peeping from their windows, not daring to venture outside, Cowards! The whole lot of them!
She looked in the direction of the Alpha’s house, not far from hers. Luna was standing out in front, watching the procession. Daisy’s heart skipped, and she almost sighed with relief, finally! She knew Luna had always loved her, and she wouldn’t let her suffer like this; she was her mother's best friend.
Luna stared directly at her, and after a while she too turned her back at Daisy and walked back into the house. Daisy almost fell to her knees again from the pain. Is this really what it feels like to be betrayed? She sniffled and wiped her eyes with the back of her palm.
As they led her farther and farther away from home and from the respected part of the community, her heart sank. What would she do now? She has seen the way the omegas are treated and she did not know if she would survive it. She is very strong willed and opinionated, and everyone knew that was not the attribute of an omega.
She was finally dumped in a dilapidated cottage just outside of town, on the south border between them and Vinette.
Daisy looked around, too exhausted to cry. She stared at the home she was going to be sharing with spiders and probably venomous snakes and of course, a leaking roof, she thought as she saw the buckets placed strategically around the sitting room.
She pushed a tattered pile of rags and sat on the arm of a chair, staring dejectedly, then she sprang up. She just could not understand it all or wrap her head around it.
“I have to go to Robert! He would know what to do. He can’t let his father treat me and my family like this”. She said to her spider companions. Why hasn’t he come to her? Did he not know of her current predicament? Daisy wondered as she stepped out, heading for his house. Well, if he didn’t know until now, this would be the perfect time to inform him. He needs to fight for her and protect her. She is his mate and she deserves that much. Robert would never let her be treated in this manner. He would be outraged if he saw the conditions she had been reduced to.
