The desperation of Ben and Susan was evident by their expressions while they were leaning on the railing, concentrating.
They didn't even notice the man in his fifties whistling happily as he walked by. When he glanced at them, he detected the concerned expressions on their faces and was tempted to ask if there was a problem, but just as he was about to approach them, he changed his mind and decided to go about his own business. He pulled a pair of shears out of his bag and began doing his job as gardener. Just as the sun happened to reflect off of the shiny shears he was using, something hopeful triggered Susan's thoughts. The importance of the gardener suddenly became of the utmost relevance.
