CHAPTER TEN

THE AFTERMATH Lily's mind was reeling as she processed the revelation she had just received. She had always known that the curse was powerful and malevolent, but she had never imagined that it was so deeply ingrained in the town's history. As she stood there, trying to make sense of it all, Lily felt a hand on her shoulder. It was Ethan, his eyes filled with concern. "Lily, are you okay?" he asked. "You look like you've seen a ghost." Lily took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. "I'm fine," she said. "I just...I didn't expect that." Ethan nodded. "I know," he said. "It's a lot to take in. But we can't give up now. We have to keep pushing forward, no matter what." Lily nodded, feeling a surge of determination. She knew that Ethan was right. They couldn't give up now, not when they were so close to uncovering the truth. As they stood there, trying to make sense of it all, Lily heard a faint noise coming from outside the chamber. It sounded like footsteps, heavy and deliberate. "What's that?" Lily whispered, her heart racing with fear. Ethan's eyes narrowed. "I don't know," he said. "But I think we should get out of here. Now." Lily nodded, and together they made their way back through the winding tunnels, the sound of the footsteps growing louder with every step. As they emerged from the tunnels, Lily saw a figure standing in the distance, its back to them. The figure was tall and imposing, its presence seeming to fill the entire space. "Who is that?" Lily whispered, her heart racing with fear. Ethan's eyes narrowed. "I don't know," he said. "But I think we should be careful. We don't know what we're dealing with here." Lily nodded, and together they approached the figure, their hearts pounding with fear and anticipation. As they got closer, the figure slowly turned to face them. Lily's eyes widened as she saw its face, a face that was both familiar and yet completely alien. It was the face of Malakai, the sorcerer who had cast the curse. But it was different, somehow. The eyes seemed darker, the skin paler. "Welcome, Lily," Malakai said, his voice low and menacing. "I've been waiting for you." Lily felt a surge of fear as she realized that she was face to face with the sorcerer who had cast the curse. She knew that she had to be careful, that she couldn't let her guard down for a second. But as she looked into Malakai's eyes, she saw something there that gave her pause. It was a glimmer of sadness, of regret. "Malakai," Lily said, her voice firm. "I know what you did. I know about the curse." Malakai's expression didn't change, but Lily saw a flicker of emotion in his eyes. "Yes," he said. "I cast the curse. But I didn't do it alone. I had help." Lily's eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?" she asked. Malakai's expression turned cold. "I mean that there was someone else involved," he said. "Someone who helped me cast the curse, who gave me the power to do it." Lily felt a surge of surprise. She had never suspected that there was someone else involved in the curse. "Who was it?" she asked, her voice firm. Malakai's eyes seemed to bore into her soul. "It was someone you know," he said. "Someone you trust." Lily's eyes widened as she realized what Malakai was saying. It was someone she knew, someone she trusted. But who? Lily's mind was racing as she tried to process what Malakai was saying. Someone she knew, someone she trusted, was involved in the curse? She thought back to all the people she had met in the town, trying to think of anyone who could be capable of such a thing. But everyone she thought of seemed so innocent, so kind. "Who is it?" Lily asked again, her voice firm. Malakai's expression turned cold. "I'll never tell," he said. "But I'll give you a hint. It's someone who has been close to you since the beginning. Someone who has been hiding in plain sight." Lily's eyes narrowed as she tried to think of who it could be. She thought of Ethan, but he had been so helpful and supportive throughout their investigation. She thought of Ariana, but she had been so kind and welcoming. And then, suddenly, a name popped into her head. It was someone she had trusted, someone she had thought was a friend. "Is it...is it Mrs. Jenkins?" Lily asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Malakai's expression didn't change, but Lily saw a flicker of surprise in his eyes. "How did you guess?" he asked, his voice low. Lily's eyes widened as she realized the truth. Mrs. Jenkins, the kind and gentle old woman who had taken her under her wing, was involved in the curse. But why? And how? Lily's mind was racing with questions as she stared at Malakai, demanding answers. But Malakai just smiled, a cold and sinister smile. "You'll never know the truth," he said. "But I'll give you one more hint. The truth is hidden in plain sight. You just have to look for it." And with that, Malakai turned and disappeared into thin air, leaving Lily alone and confused. Lily stood there for a moment, trying to process what had just happened. She had uncovered a shocking truth, but she still had so many questions. And then, suddenly, she heard a noise behind her. She turned to see Ethan standing there, a look of concern on his face. "Lily, what's going on?" he asked. "I saw Malakai disappear into thin air. What did he say to you?" Lily took a deep breath, trying to process everything that had just happened. "It's Mrs. Jenkins," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "She's involved in the curse." Ethan's eyes widened in shock. "What? How did you figure it out?" Lily shook her head. "Malakai told me," she said. "But I don't know why she's involved or what her role is. We need to find out more." Ethan nodded, his expression determined. "We will," he said. "We'll get to the bottom of this, no matter what it takes." Together, they turned and walked away, determined to uncover the truth about Mrs. Jenkins and the curse. But as they walked, Lily couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched, that unblinking eyes were trained on them from the shadows. And she knew that they were running out of time. They had to uncover the truth before it was too late.
