He froze. I continued, "I don't want my face ruined, because then my life would be ruined too." I was twenty that year. I had an unhappy family, and I wasn't mature or strong enough. So I decided that I needed to learn to love myself first. No matter what Christian said, I refused his help. I returned the ring, packed my suitcase, and crossed the ocean. I wanted to see the world for myself. Life was difficult. My appearance attracted a lot of attention. At first, I wasn't used to the stares. I was even afraid to go out. I forced myself into crowded places, pretending not to care, but my palms were always sweaty. But even more difficult than the stares was survival. I didn't take a single dollar Christian offered. Fortunately, while my face was disfigured, it was also eye-catching.
