The Lycans …
It's a complete waste of time.
No matter how many times we passed by the unmated she-wolves that gathered here, we were still unable to detect the scent of our mates among them. Our heightened senses would quickly pick up any indication if one of these young women had been near them.
And that was not the case with any of them.
The faint scent that we observed on the two fleeing she-wolves was not from Crescent Moon. We were one hundred percent sure about that. Our women were not from this pack; we had to look for them elsewhere.
"Alpha Dimitri, is there another pack in the immediate area?" my Lycan wolf Xan questioned, unfriendly. His mood had been at an all-time low since we lost our mate in the woods. And now that he couldn't find her here, he could easily turn into a violent beast. Only the Alpha didn't seem to notice that.
The man conveniently ignored the danger emanating from me.
He was so focused on the benefits if our mates turned out to be from his pack. He was already rubbing his hands at the prospect of being linked to The Royal Kingdom as it would mean a huge upgrade for both him personally and his pack. This young Alpha had just taken over the position from his father and now had to prove to his pack that he was capable of increasing its numbers and influence; this was an excellent opportunity.
“Sorry, my Prince. We are the only ones in this region. The next pack is almost two hundred kilometers away behind the nature reserve beside us," he answered apologetically. "The women you're looking for must be from our pack, there's no other way. Have you already met my sisters?” he asked, eyes glistening.
I cast a look of despair at Herod. By the Moon Goddess, spare us those empty-headed Alpha females as mates for us.
When we arrived here yesterday, they were the first ones we met as we entered the packhouse. They practically threw themselves into our arms without any reservations—shamelessly so! Although I would have eagerly taken advantage of that under normal circumstances, my usually horny wolf Xan was not in the mood for some reason.
And now I understood why, he sensed an important event was imminent. In fact, long before laying eyes on her, Xan had already detected our mate's presence within close proximity to us.
Herod made a stinky face, also not keen on the idea of meeting the Alpha sisters. He and his wolf, Xin, also disliked those cheap she-wolves.
“Are there rogues in the area then?” I asked again. “Because strangely enough, their scent was very light as if they weren't pack wolves. They were only present during the rituals; we did not see them when we arrived or at the pre-festivals. Besides, they ran towards the forest and not to the residential area of the pack.”
Before I even finished speaking, he shook his head resolutely.
"No, Prince, that can never be the case. Rogues do not dare come within ten miles of our borders. My father took care of that during his reign," he proudly claimed. "Crescent Moon is known for the way we tackle threats; we are not very lenient."
Standing tall with my hands on my hips, I took another glance at the dozen she-wolves knelt before us. Each one eagerly awaited to find out whether they would be our fated or chosen one.
'They are not here, human. I've told you that for the umpteenth time,' my wolf growled in my mind. "Let's get out of here and look for them in the woods once more."
That was actually stating the obvious since we couldn’t find the girls here. Last night I couldn't sleep a wink. He kept insisting that we should look for our mate instead of wasting time in bed.
And when I didn't make a move to get out from under the covers, he bombarded my mind with all kinds of hot s*x positions involving our black-haired mate moaning in ecstasy and other such images that made my body glow with insatiable desire. After several hours, it became too much for me and I had no choice but to go into the bathroom to take care of myself.
Herod had urged me not to hunt our mates; he feared that this would make them even more skittish. We would approach them calmly and persuade them to accept us and come home with us. My brother, being the romantic among us, suggested showering them with flowers and chocolates and taking them out on a date until the mate bond was properly established.
“Herod, let's go back where we lost sight of them yesterday. Maybe we'll find new tracks,” I suggested to my twin brother. He nodded and turned his back to the still bowing, excited girls. When I noticed that Alpha Dimitri instructed his Head Warrior to follow us at an appropriate distance, I stopped him.
“No, Alpha, this is a private matter, and we don't want any witnesses,” I told him. “We'll be back in a few hours, regardless of whether or not we find them.”
We decided to go with one of the vehicles we arrived in Crescent Moon with. Our own Chief Warrior, our best friend Walter, came with us.
“Herod, there were two women. One was white-blonde, and the other black-haired. On which one did Xan lay his claim?” my brother asked me.
His question took me off guard, I hadn't thought of that before. I thought back to the moment when I noticed the light scent and my wolf went crazy with joy.
‘Xan?’ I reached out to my wolf for an answer.
However, he remained silent, even after I asked him for an explanation again. Ultimately, I had no choice but to express my doubts to Herod.
"I do not know. I asked him, but he kept quiet as this is his best secret," I answered while rolling my eyes. "And you? Which one did Xin choose?"
Maybe here I would get the answer that my wolf withheld from me. If Herod's wolf chose one of the girls, then the remaining one must be mine. However, to my disappointment, he merely shrugged his shoulders.
“No explanation here either,” he groaned discontentedly. “Our wolves don't really cooperate. I guess we'll just have to wait until we meet them again. Then these beasts will no longer be able to remain silent.”
As we made the drive to where we last saw our mates, I wondered what was going on with Xan. He was so ecstatic to have finally discovered the girl we will hold dear to us. We waited for her for two years, the Kingdom had already started to think we would stay mateless. These worried looks from everywhere were annoying me; it was as if Herod and I were getting old, and there was no time left to find them.
Just a little longer, and we could present our girls to all those evil wishers. In the few minutes that I was able to observe them before they disappeared, I could see that both of them were very beautiful women. I was just wondering which one was my mate. Usually, I prefer black-haired ones, but my mate would be perfect with any hair color.
I would accept her as she was, she was mine, gifted by the Moon Goddess. I was going to love and cherish her, making her the happiest mated she-wolf in the world.
Selene is my witness, I promise!
