The courtyard erupted into chaos.
Panicked voices echoed from every direction.
Some wolves rushed toward Liyana.
Others surrounded Kael.
Neither of them could stand.
The pain still tore through them.
Maren pushed through the crowd and dropped to her knees beside Liyana.
“Liyana.”
She gently lifted Liyana’s head into her lap.
Liyana trembled.
Silent tears rolled down her cheeks.
She wasn’t sobbing.
She wasn’t screaming.
She simply stared ahead.
Broken.
Inside Liyana’s mind…
Nova lay curled into herself.
The bright blue eyes that were always full of life looked dull.
She wasn’t crying anymore.
She just stared into the distance.
Liyana swallowed the lump in her throat.
“Nova…”
No answer.
A long silence passed.
Then Nova whispered,
‘He rejected us…’
Liyana closed her eyes.
Fresh tears slipped down her face.
Neither of them spoke again.
The warriors helped Kael to his feet.
The pain slowly began to fade.
The first thing he did was reach for Onyx.
“Onyx?”
Silence.
He tried again.
“Onyx.”
After a long moment…
Onyx finally answered.
His voice was cold.
‘Don’t.’
Kael froze.
“Onyx…”
‘Don’t talk to me.’
Kael’s chest tightened.
He had never heard Onyx sound like that.
“Onyx…”
‘You rejected our mate after we’ve waited two years before finding her.’
Kael lowered his head.
He had no words.
After a long silence, Onyx spoke again.
‘Leave me alone.’
Then he disappeared deeper into their shared mind.
No matter how many times Kael called for him…
There was no answer.
The entire pack was in shock.
Whispers spread through the village before the sun had even begun to set.
“I can’t believe it.”
“He rejected his mate.”
“The future Alpha…”
“…and she was an omega.”
Some wolves looked at Liyana with pity.
Others quietly agreed that Kael had made the right decision.
“An Alpha needs a strong Luna.”
The pack was already dividing.
Liyana heard the whispers.
Every single one hurt.
Maren helped Liyana back to the cottage.
The walk felt longer than it ever had before.
Neither of them spoke.
Once they were inside…
Liyana finally broke.
She cried.
Not because Kael had rejected her.

For one brief moment…
She had believed someone had been made just for her.
Maren wrapped her arms around her.
She didn’t tell her everything would be okay.
She didn’t tell her to stop crying.
She simply held her.
Kael sat alone inside the Alpha House.
The silence was unbearable.

Onyx would have been talking.
Complaining.
Laughing.
Anything.

Nothing.
Kael closed his eyes.
“Onyx…”
No answer.
“I’m sorry.”
Silence.
“I’m so sorry.”
Nothing.
For the first time since they were children…
Kael felt completely alone.
Night fell over Moon Shadow Pack.
Liyana lay awake in her bed.
Nova hadn’t moved.
Kael lay awake in the Alpha House.
Onyx refused to speak.
