TOMORROW

623 Words
TWO YEARS LATER… Liyana adjusted another sack of grain before stepping back to wipe the sweat from her forehead. The storage house was busy as the omegas worked together, sorting and organizing supplies. One of the older omegas looked over at her and smiled. “You’re quiet today.” Liyana looked up in surprise. “I am?” Another omega laughed. “It’s because she’s only got one day left before she might be able to find her mate.” Liyana froze. Tomorrow. Tomorrow was her eighteenth birthday. Before she could even think another thought, Nova appeared in their shared mind. ‘Tomorrow!’ ‘Tomorrow!’ ‘Tomorrow!’ Liyana laughed despite herself. As they continued working, Nova couldn’t stay still. She paced back and forth. Then she started talking. ‘What do you think he’ll look like?’ ‘Do you think he’ll have a deep voice?’ ‘Maybe he’ll be funny.’ ‘I hope he likes running.’ Liyana shook her head with a smile. “You’re getting ahead of yourself.” Nova answered immediately. ‘We’ve waited eighteen years.’ Liyana’s smile faded just a little. “What if our mate doesn’t like us?” “What if we don’t meet him tomorrow or anytime soon?” Nova stopped pacing. Liyana burst into laughter to ease of the tension. Later that afternoon, Liyana delivered lunch to several elderly wolves. As she handed over another tray, one of them smiled. “What are you thinking about?” Liyana hesitated. “My birthday.” The elder nodded knowingly. “So tomorrow’s your day.” Another elder chuckled. “I couldn’t eat the day before I found my mate.” “I fainted,” another admitted. Everyone laughed. One older wolf shook his head. “I walked straight into a tree because I wasn’t paying attention.” The laughter grew louder. Liyana couldn’t help laughing with them. For the first time… She found herself looking forward to tomorrow. That evening, Liyana sat in the cottage with a book resting on her lap. She stared at the same page. Maren looked over at her and smiled. “You haven’t turned that page in ten minutes.” Liyana sighed. “I’m nervous.” Maren’s smile softened. “That’s normal.” She reached over and gently squeezed Liyana’s hand. “Finding your mate is one of life’s greatest blessings.” “But it doesn’t define who you are.” She held Liyana’s gaze. “Whether your mate is a king or an omega…” “Never forget your own worth.” Liyana smiled and nodded. “I won’t.” Before bed, Maren walked into Liyana’s room carrying something wrapped in cloth. “I wanted you to have this before tomorrow.” She unfolded it carefully. Inside was a hand-sewn shawl. Liyana looked at it in surprise. “It’s beautiful.” Maren smiled. “I made it for you.” Liyana threw her arms around her aunt. “Thank you.” Nova watched quietly. ‘We’re lucky to have Maren.’ Liyana smiled. “We really are.” Midnight came. Liyana lay awake in bed. Sleep refused to come. Nova wasn’t sleeping either. ‘Do you think he’ll be kind?’ Liyana smiled into the darkness. “He better be.” “What if he’s serious?” ‘Then I’ll make him laugh.’ Liyana was quiet for a moment. “What if he doesn’t like us?” Nova became completely serious. ‘Liyana.’ ‘The moon goddess doesn’t make a mistake. Whatever happens, then it’s because she planned for something bigger ahead.’ Liyana took a slow breath. Then, at last, she closed her eyes. Outside… The moon shone brightly over Moon Shadow Pack. A new day had begun. Liyana was now eighteen years old.
