Chapter 2 My Mother's Wish

1050 Words
By the time the first rays of sunlight tried to sneak through the gaps between the skyscrapers, I was already standing in the middle of the study. Sean's figure was just a silhouette against the floor-to-ceiling windows, the light barely outlining his sharp profile. "After I marry Aliya, she won't be living here, and it won't affect your status in the Buren family. So, stay out of her way." His voice was so cold, like he was just stating a mundane fact. "You think all I care about is my status?" I shot back, my heart twisting with a mix of emotions. I'd been the one holding the Buren family together, including covering his mother's sky-high medical bills and dealing with every little thing. And he called all this my status? "Your opinion doesn't matter. This is just a courtesy, not a discussion," Sean replied, his tone flat and detached. Without another word, he turned and walked down the hallway. The door slammed shut behind him, echoing through the empty room. I stood there, stared after him, and felt nothing but irony. Mila stepped up next to me after Sean left. She was the child my parents had adopted, and now the only family I had. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she said to me, "Nola, he's treating you so unfairly... What are we going to do now?" I gently wiped the tears from her eyes, my resolve hardening. "Mila, we've never relied on anyone. If he's decided to break his promises, we gotta be brave enough to walk away. Don't forget I'm an alpha too." "Check the financial reports," I said, cutting off her protest. Mila blinked in confusion but then nodded. She pulled up the financial records from over the years. The Buren family's business had been in the red for years—if not for the money I'd been pouring in, it would've been nothing more than an empty shell. "Nola," Mila said cautiously, "your mother once told you that she wanted you to get married and live a peaceful life. If we leave now..." I didn't answer, and my mind drifted back to three years ago. ***** Back then, the Moonshadow Tribe had three major families: the Smiths, the Olleys, and the Burens. With Moonshadow's growing power and wealth, we became a target for rival tribes. Conflicts were constant. During one brutal land dispute, my father and three brothers were killed in battle. From that day on, the Olley family fell into ruin. The balance between the three families was shattered, and the Smith family rose to the top, their strength undeniable. The Buren family took the second seat. When I returned home, I found my mother kneeling on the floor, clutching my father and brothers' belongings, and sobbing uncontrollably. Her tears had left her nearly blind, but the tears kept flowing from her hollow, empty eyes. "Nola, my sweetie, don't follow the same path as your father and brothers!" she cried, her voice hoarse as she hugged me tight. "Stay out of these fights! Just marry someone and live a peaceful life!" To comfort her, I gave up on my dreams of becoming a warrior. I told myself I'd follow her wishes, settle down, and start a family. Sean was the husband my mother chose for me. I thought marrying him would fulfill her wish. But now, with Sean's betrayal, everything had shattered into nothing. "Nola, you alright?" Mila's voice pulled me back to reality. I stared at the bills on the screen, a storm of pain and anger swirling inside me. "Mila, there's nothing here for me anymore. We have to leave." Mila hesitated to say, "But Nola, where are you going?" I stayed quiet for a moment before softly replying, "Home." Mila froze. She knew as well as I did that my home no longer existed. As the last surviving member of the Olley family, I had no one left in the world. "Nola, you mean..." "Yes, Mila, I'm going back," I said, my voice calm but resolute, "I'm going to rebuild the Olley family." When my father and brothers died, it was during Moonshadow's most crucial moment. Their sacrifice created the tribe's power today. If it weren't for that tragedy, the Olley family would be standing tall beside the mighty Smith family. Mila looked at me, a little unsure, but she nodded firmly. "I'll follow you, always." A small smile crossed my face, and warmth filled my chest. At least someone was still with me in this world. The next day, Sean's mother summoned me. I stood outside her room and took a deep breath before pushing open the door. The room was bathed in soft light, and members of the Buren family had already gathered inside. The air was thick with unspoken tension, which pressed down on me like a weight. She stretched her hand out toward me with a smile. Reluctantly, I stepped forward. "Nola, my dear, you've finally come." She took my hand, her voice so sweet that it sent a chill down my spine. She said in a gentle tone, "Sean's returned now. You no longer need to handle the family affairs on your own." I stayed silent, knowing full well what she really meant. "You know, the Olley family's glory is long gone." She paused, choosing her words carefully. "But the Buren family can offer you a bright future." 'That's a clear threat,' I thought to myself. I lifted my gaze to meet her eyes. "What do you think of Aliya?" She bulged her eyes and was caught off guard by my question. Yet she quickly regained her composure and put on the same practiced smile. "I've only met her a few times, but her contributions to the tribe and her success in business complement Sean perfectly. That's undeniable." "Oh, really? How wonderful," I said with a bitter laugh. "Please excuse my forwardness, but as long as I'm still here, Aliya will always just be a shadow in the background." Her smile faltered for the briefest second. "Now, now, don't be silly. Aliya will soon marry Sean. Evan's already given his blessing." "Oh? And what about me?" I shot back. "Once they're married, what exactly does that make me?" The room instantly went dead silent.
