I waited, watching Cheryl calmly as she continued. "The wedding didn't go smoothly, and Aliya blew up at home, setting Mother off again," she complained, frustration evident in her voice. I scoffed inwardly. Irene had finally met her match. When I'd been part of her family, I'd respected her without question, never contradicting her wishes or raising my voice. Still, she could never truly accept me. Now, with Aliya as her chosen daughter-in-law, she'd essentially invited her own downfall. Cheryl went on, "I was the one who organized the wedding, so now that there's trouble, all the blame is falling on me. If anything happens to Mother, I'm likely to be kicked out of the Buren family..." I picked at my ear, indifferent. "So what? Walking away from a place like that wouldn't be a loss."
