I lowered my gaze. "I did tell Evan, but he didn't believe me..."
Carlos shook his head. "You should've told him that your cousin Zain uncovered the intel. Evan respects Zain. He would've trusted it."
"Penny did pose as Zain and emailed me, but..." I paused. "After our tech department checked, the message was flagged as fake, so Evan dismissed it."
Carlos went quiet, lost in thought.
"I only received Penny's message when I was close to the border. She impersonated Zain because she feared Evan wouldn't trust it otherwise... only for her to be exposed."
