Violetta
Alaric hung up before I could say a word more and I couldn't even move. My head throbbed, my whole body shaking as I tried to breath.
I must have heard it wrong. Lilith wasn't even in the country.
I dialed his number again, it rang once, twice, but this time it wasn't ignored but rather he cut the call.
My heart throbbed hard against my chest.
I called again, and this time his phone was off. My eyes widened. I fumbled in my bag for my keys and dashed out of the place.
My phone was placed where my eyes could easily see them. I kept dialing his number over and over again while I drove to the only place I knew he would go to for a celebration.
The tires screeched against the hard floors and I pushed the door open. In my rush, I forgot my phone in the car.
I grabbed it, and took a deep breath. So what if she was back? She was the one who wronged me, not the other way around.
I tried to calm myself but I couldn't stop my heart from beating hard against my chest.
"Sorry." I apologized after opening the door to a couple. I shook my head, apologizing all through the wrong doors I opened and soon, I heard her voice.
My eyes widened, I pushed the door open, and sure enough, I wasn't hallucinating.
Lilith stood right there, her hands all over Alaric, completely absorbed in their little world.
I walked in, my mind a mess. His teammates called out to me, but I couldn't be bothered to stop.
My eyes stayed fixed on them but they didn't even budge.
Lilith cited me first, hanging over my husband's shoulder, she smiled at me, mouthing some words.
Alaric soon caught on and turned to me, a flicker of shock showed in his eyes but it was soon replaced by something more scary.
My eyes twitched as I stopped before them. I looked between the two, waiting for one of them to give me an explanation but they only smiled, like nothing had happened.
I ignored Lilith's gaze and turned to Alaric. "Care to explain this?"
Alaric sighed, throwing his head back, unwilling to speak. "This is the team's new investor, she asked me to keep her company." He spoke bluntly.
I opened my mouth to speak but I couldn't get any words out.
"I already told you I'm busy. What are you doing here?" He asked, his hands caressing the rim of the wine glass.
"Don't you know who this is?" I managed to say but there wasn't even a flicker of remorse in his life.
I stared at the man before my eyes. This was the same person who took days off, even missing a match just because of the stunt Lilith had tried to pull but now he doesn't remember that?
"It's all in the past. It's best if you let it go." Alaric said, and I couldn't help but find my lips hanging open.
"Right." Lilith said, locking her hand with his. "The same way you will soon be the past." She mouthed, making sure to avoid Alaric.
"Really?"
I asked.
"Return home now. I'll try to come back before midnight." Alaric said, getting up to his feet and walking away.
I rushed after him.
"How did you win today? How did you know of our tactics so clearly?" I asked, and he smiled but it didn't reach his eyes.
"Of course through our team's work. How else?"
A smile cracked up onto my face.
"Your team's work helped you know our tactics so clearly?" I raised a brow.
Alaric rolled his eyes. "You already said you would leave your work after this match. How does it matter to suffer a little defeat?"
"Little defeat?" I repeated his words, baffled.
Wasn't this the same person I told that my team's win meant a lot to them. The dreams and hopes of over three people were in this game.
And he called it "little defeat."
"Can you go home? I'm not going to feel comfortable having fun if you are here." Alaric smiled.
Suddenly, my heart wasn't aching anymore. I smiled back, "Okay."
He nodded, patting my head before disappearing into the crowd. I stared at his retreating figure, my smile dropping.
It clicked.
There was no need for me to keep hanging on any more. He never loved me, and he already has what he wanted.
I spun on my heel, walking away.
I pulled out my phone, dialing a number but I hesitated. I didn't want to hear his complaints, and that 'I was right' that I dreaded so much.
My eyes stayed fixed and I did not notice someone coming.
I recoiled after hitting something broad, and hard. I rubbed my head as I raised my head up slowly and my eyes shrank when I saw him.
Jude.
The player I tried so hard to recruit into my team but kept declining.
"You shouldn't be so absorbed in your phone." He said, and I snapped out of it. I tucked my phone back into my back pocket.
"I'm sorry." I apologized, walking away.
In the car, I pulled out the phone again, and still hesitated but I didn't call him.
I cleared off his number and placed a call to my lawyer. "Prepare documents for my divorce."
What came on the other head was silence. After a while, he answered. "Okay."
I cut the call, and started the car. Everyone had thought I would never leave him, after all he was the one who helped me in the darkest moment of my life.
But now, he told me to just forget about the past that had almost taken my life.
I took in a deep breath, staring at the huge apartment before my eyes, the one he had gotten for us after his career got better. The place where I thought our children would grow up.
I guess I was wrong.
I sighed, stepping in but a call came in at that moment.
"There's something wrong with the marriage certificate.”
