We went through the surgey doors and into Harpo's room, which was the last door to the right of the small corridor. Shawna walked in behind the nurse who stopped to the left of Harpo. Shawna continued walking slowly, observing his motionless body laid out on the hospital bed. Passing the nurse and crossing the foot of the bed she saw Harpo in a hospital gown, wrapped up in a blanket from his waist down. He laid flat and straight on the bed, as if he were sleeping, but neater than he usually slept; which was sprawled out over the entire bed. As Shawna walked to his right she could see the IV tube sticking out of his arm. As she looked up to look upon his face, she noticed the breathing tubes in his nose. Those tubes and the monitors they were connected to, were the only things that confirmed all of this was real. That for once in his life, and for the first time in their mating-- Harpo was helpless. Shawna was now the one in this relationship with the power. The realization was refreshing. No, more than refreshing... it was freeing! Her heavy laden heart started to lighten up. She was straightening up my hunched spine and standing taller. Without catching herself, she smiled at Harpo's still body. "Are you alright Shawna? It is ok to feel sad. You don't have to hide it. But know we are very confident he will pull through, and be back with you in no time!" The nurse exclaimed. Taking my reaction to mean something more than what it was. Noticing herself and hearing the nurse's words quickly changed her mood.
Shawna's heart started to weigh her down again. Her back started to slump. She then turned to the nurse slowly, with her head down, and said the only thing she could think of at that moment. "Yes. Thank you nurse..." Shawna couldn't remember her name. Even though she saw her around several times a week, Shawna never had any dealings with her personally. Knowing that, she genuinely felt ashamed and started to blush, lowering her head further. The nurse came to her side hurriedly and put her right hand on Shawna's shoulder and her left hand on her left arm. "Oh, no don't do that. There is nothing to be ashamed of dear. Consider yourself lucky that we have not officially met until now. Many folks of this pack cannot say that. My name is Sherry. Nurse Sherry Wilcox." Shawna looked at Nurse Wilcox hand on her arm and then looked up at her, with wondering eyes. If only she knew how unlucky Shawna was. True, Shawna had never came to see her before. But that wasn't beacuse she didn't need to see her. She was simply forbidden to go to her, or anyone for that matter, whenever Harpo beat her to the point he broke or busted something on her person, she was forced to stay behind close doors until she healed. Slowly and painfully she recovered. But they both knew that she could have recovered much quicker and less painfully if she had been permitted to see someone like Nurse Wilcox. Harpo was afraid of anyone finding out about how he mistreated her, as it was considered unfathomable for true mates to physically harm one another, with out the other feeling it too. Shawna was lost in her thoughts on this matter. As she looked up she met the Nurse Wilcox's eyes. She didn't realize she was doing that either, until Nurse Wilcox suddenly looked away from her gaze, and down at the floor.
Realization struck her and she quickly went to apologize, but the Nurse Wilcox put her hand up dismissively. "There is no need to apologize Shawna. You are going through a traumatic moment. These types of things can throw anyone off kilter. I know you didn't mean it." With the last sentence she looked up at me, smiled and looked back at Harpo. "You know he may be in acomma, but I think he can hear you. I will give you two some time alone to talk." With that Nurse Wilcox, left the room.
