Julieanna felt that someone had slapped her face hard, and her ears were ringing.
Seeing that she didn't move at all, the doctor figured that she was afraid. Then the doctor said coldly, "It's just a simple physical hygiene check. Just lie down and take off your pants so that I can take a sample."
Julieanna clutched her pants with both hands, forcing herself to calm down and comfort herself.
She thought, just think of it as a free checkup. It's no big deal.
She lay on the bed expressionlessly, already figuring out Adam's intention.
The doctor gently scraped Julieanna's lower part with a cotton swab, and the whole thing ended soon.
Julieanna got up, unable to think straight, and found that her feet had gone numb in a minute. Her legs were shaking.
It was not because of fear. It was because of anger.
"You can go now. I'll give the result directly to Mr. Bafford."
Julieanna did not say anything. She tidied up her clothes and walked out as calmly as possible.
She sat in the corridor for a while and cleared her thoughts.
She thought, Adam figured that I had s*x with Louis, so he sent me here to have a checkup in case of anything.
She took a deep breath and wanted to snap when her phone suddenly rang.
It was Adam.
Julieanna wiped her face, kept her voice from trembling, and said, "Mr. Pruitt."
"Is the checkup done?" Adam's voice was cold and calm.
Julieanna stared at herself reflected on the wall opposite her and said coldly, "I have already resigned. You really do not need to compensate me for a checkup."
His sneer came from the other end of the line.
Then he asked her in his usual tone, "Haven't you checked your emails yet?"
Julieanna frowned and had a bad feeling. "I..."
He interrupted her and said concisely, "Come over at eight o'clock. I will go back."
After that, he hung up, and she could only hear the busy tone.
Julieanna couldn't wait till she got back. The next second, she checked her inbox with her phone.
The HR Department replied to her with nothing but a screenshot, and she could tell at first glance that it was a contract.
She was supposed to be Adam's secretary for five years. If she resigned before that, she would have to pay 1.5 million dollars.
Julieanna's pupils dilated, and she felt cold all over as if she was in some ice house.
When she entered the company, she was new to the line of work and didn't pay enough attention to the exact contents of the contract, but she was pretty sure that this clause wasn't included.
Then she realized that over these years, she had signed countless contracts while staying by Adam's side.
Probably he plotted against her and mixed the contract with other contracts deliberately at some point, and she signed it without having a clue.
She still had less than three months left in her five-year term.
Julieanna closed her eyes, stood up while propping up a chair, and quickly figured out the optimal plan which would cause her the least in her mind.
She had to get through these three months. Without the 1.5 million dollars, her future life would be suffering.
On the way back, she persuaded herself ceaselessly, trying to get rid of the sense of shame. However, it was like the smell of disinfectant in the hospital, gluing to her body.
After she went back, she took a shower and rubbed her whole body. Then the sense of shame gradually dissipated with the smell of disinfectant, settling into the deepest part of her heart.
She numbly browsed her phone until it was dark. Then she took a taxi to Adam's place.
At the door, she tried to unlock the door with her fingerprint.
"Sorry, your fingerprint is invalid."
The mechanical voice was cold and ruthless. Julieanna sneered in a low voice, bundled herself up, and sat down on the steps.
She could have left or gone to the café across the street, yet it would only make Adam angrier. She could not bear his anger, so she could only bear the cold wind on such a freezing night.
It was getting darker. It was not until after nine o'clock when she thought her head was beginning to spin that a strong beam of light came through, and she became sober in an instant.
Adam stepped out of the car and saw the woman huddling under the steps under the strong light.
She looked like a stray dog, and she reminded him of the woman a few years ago.
He inexplicably had mixed feelings. He slowly walked over and stood in front of the woman. "How long have you been here?"
"I have been here since 7:40." Julieanna sounded calm and not angry at all.
Adam's heart was no longer in turmoil because of her calm tone. He quietly withdrew his gaze, walked past her, and went upstairs.
Julieanna looked up, her face calm, and followed him.
After entering the living room, Adam took off his coat, threw it on the sofa, lowered his head slightly, and slowly undid his cufflinks.
He ignored Julieanna and went straight upstairs.
It was a long day filled with meetings, so, of course, he chose to take a bath before anything.
He heard her footsteps behind him. She kept a proper distance from him, and the sound of her footsteps stopped only after she reached the door.
Adam sneered silently, took off his clothes naturally, and walked into the bathroom naked.
