CHAPTER FOUR: THE ROGUE'S SECRET

1149 Words
Damien's pov. “There Is something about her even though he doesn't deserve you,” I whispered to myself as I crouched behind the thick tree line, staring at the small wooden cabin at the edge of the Silvermoon pack’s territory. I could see the high moon casting a pale glow over the forest. My heart pounded louder than any wolf's howl. I'd been hiding in these woods for weeks, always careful and always silent. Packs haunted me. They called me a rogue, a traitor. But I wasn't here to haunt anyone. I was only there for the truth. I folded the small note and left it on the wooden step just outside her door. Then I turned and disappeared into the shadows. My wolf was restless tonight. He didn't like being this close to the pack grounds. But she was worth the risk. Emily. The omega with eyes that looked like they’d seen too much pain. She never smiled. She walked with her shoulders bent like the world had crushed her. But her hands… her hands were gentle. I saw her once comforting a pup who fell, and my heart twisted. I had no right to care. But I did. I didn’t just watch her. I saw everything. The way she flinched when someone said Elijah’s name. The way she held her belly like she was afraid to let go. The way she walked alone in the forest, whispering things I couldn’t hear. She was hiding something. At first, I thought she was just scared. Most omegas were. But then I saw Naomi, the pack’s healer, visit her at odd hours. I followed Naomi one night, and I saw what she was carrying. Herbs. The kind only used for expecting she-wolves. That’s when it hit me. Emily was pregnant. And not just with any child. Elijah’s child. The proud Alpha’s son. The same Elijah who always pretended to be kind and perfect in public. But I’d seen him sneak off. I’d seen him trading silver dust with shady outsiders. And I knew he was hiding something dark. So why was Emily keeping the baby a secret? Was she scared of him? Was she trying to protect her child? The next morning, I watched from a high branch as Emily stepped outside. She looked around, her eyes cautious. Then she saw the note. She slowly picked it up like it might bite her. She read it. Her eyes filled with tears. She didn't cry out loud, she just stood there in silence with her trembling fingers. Then she turned and walked back inside. My chest hurts. I wanted to go to her. To tell her she wasn’t alone. But what could I say? I was a rogue. A nobody. She wouldn’t trust me. But something told me she needed someone. And maybe… maybe that someone could be me. Later that day, I followed Naomi again. She met with Elijah in the forest near the river. I stayed low, hidden by the trees. “Elijah, she's getting weaker,” Naomi said. “You can't keep this hidden forever; you need to do something.” “She'll be fine,” Elijah coldly said. “You just have to keep her quiet. I don't want anyone to know that she's carrying my child”. “She's scared of you”. Naomi said, her voice shaking. “She should be,” Elijah replied. “If she tries to run I will hunt her down myself”. I gritted my teeth. My wolf growled inside me. This wasn’t just about a secret anymore. This was about power. Control. And Emily was the one caught in the middle. That night, I crept closer to the cabin. I had to talk to her. Had to warn her. Maybe I was crazy. Maybe she’d scream and call for help. But I had to try. I tapped softly on the window. No answer. I tried again. Finally, the curtain moved. Her face appeared. She looked scared. But when she saw me—saw me—something in her eyes changed. She opened the window just a little. “Who are you?” She whispered. “My name is Damien,” I said quietly. “I'm not here to hurt you”. “You're……a rogue,” she said, her eyes becoming wide. “Yes,” I said. “But I know your secret. And I want to help you”. She looked around. “You shouldn't be here. Please just leave”. “I know but I heard Elijah. I know what he said to Naomi. The truth is you're not safe here”. Tears rolled down her cheeks. “Nowhere is safe. I can't run. He will find me”. “Then let me help you,” I said. “We can leave tonight”. She shook her head. “This looks risky. I'm sorry I can't….I'm too far along. And….I have no one”. “You've me,” I said. Silence filled the space between us. Her lips trembled. “Why do you want to help me?”. I looked into her eyes. “That's because no one helped me when I needed it. And you don't deserve to be afraid. Together we can overcome”. She looked down at her belly. “It's a girl”. She whispered. I smiled. “She's lucky to have you”. We talked for what felt like hours. She told me how Elijah had promised to protect her but changed the moment she found out she was pregnant. How he told her no one would believe her. How he said her life would be over if she spoke a word. “You’re brave,” I said. “No,” she whispered. “I’m broken.” I reached through the window and touched her hand. “Then we’re both broken. But maybe we can fix each other.” Just as I was about to leave. I heard something. A twig snapped. I froze. Emily's eyes widened. “You have to go,” she said, panicking. “Someone is coming; watch out,” I whispered. I backed away into the shadows, my heart racing. From behind a tree, I saw Elijah step into view. His face was dark, angry. He looked straight at the cabin. Then he spoke. “I know someone’s been visiting you, Emily.” She didn’t answer. “Who is he?” Elijah growled. “Don’t lie to me.” She stood firm. “No one. I’ve been alone.” “Don’t play games with me,” he snapped. “I can smell him.” My wolf snarled inside me. He could smell me? I had masked my scent with herbs… or so I thought. Was I slipping? Or was Elijah stronger than I realized?
