The beliefs of Kara and her people in this story are loosely based upon the ideas of the Apache Indians. I didn’t attribute the ideas directly because my story offers only a glimpse of a complex and fascinating worldview—and one that is not entirely accurate. I modified not only stories, but the situation of Kara and her people. For example, the Apache do not occupy the area of the Trinity site, nor have they asserted a specific claim to it.
