Chapter 3 | Edinburgh, MA

308 Words
Apparently, the only form of servant work Melinda Humphrey has deduced I don't completely suck at is baking. Today, I have been assigned puff pastry duty. Yes, these sweet treats are for Emma. Lady Rosalind is allowing her daughter to eat her heart out now that Sebastian has expressed his admiration for her newfound curvature. Puff pastries have historically been my favorite breakfast item to whip up. Back when my life had some semblance of direction, I used to make them for our monthly department meetings. Oh how I miss my food processor. Puff pastry dough is not fun to make by hand. I am serving up my creations in the sunny, gold-encrusted upstairs dining room, when Emma's shrill voice breaks through my reverie. "Now I know it's a bit unconventional, but I would like to marry Sebastian on the last day of this month. It will be the one-year anniversary of when we first met, and I just think it would be unbelievably romantic to tie the knot on that day." This declaration has Lady Rosalind peaking up from over her newspaper, "That's a very quick turnaround, my dear." "I know." "It's already August second. Don't you worry people will talk?" "Not if we make a spectacle out of the meaning of my wedding date." "Well, I suppose it can be done so long as we dedicate our entire staff to the wedding preparations." Emma squeals, "Oh thank you, Mother! I knew you'd pull through." Rosalind smiles softly at Emma's praise. It's almost like she rarely gets a kind word from her daughter. "You need to make sure you speak very clearly with whomever you choose to make the invitations. They must specify the importance of the date on the mailers." Emma grins, almost maniacly, I might add. "I know just the crafty lady for the job."
