Chapter 9 | Edinburgh, MA

357 Words
Emma is standing in front of her full-length mirror, admiring her receding waistline. Naturally, she drops down in front of her vanity the very moment little William begins to cry. And that's my cue! I pad over to the distressed infant, and prepare to rock his crib back-and-forth until Emma deems he has had enough of nap time. I am almost exclusively working for Emma now, the only exception being when Lady Rosalind is hosting and Chef needs help with service. Emma needs round-the-clock assistance. Being a new mother and a new wife is a lot on top of being a full-time adulteress. "I'm going to need you to cover for me tonight," Emma tells me with a sly smile as she wraps her hair up in curlers. "Jack's taking me out for dinner. Or, I guess I should say, I'm taking Jack out for dinner. You guys make next to nothing, you know. I really don't know how you survive on those wages." Sometimes it's best to just ignore every single word that comes out of Emma's mouth. If you don't, you might end up strangling her. "What time are you guys leaving at?" I ask instead of cussing her out. "Our reservation is at 7 PM, but we will need to leave here an hour before that because we are being smart and getting far out of town." "I'm happy to hear that. What time will you be back?" "Probably not until morning," Emma winks. "And are you going to take the proper steps to ensure that we don't see a replay of your last little predicament?" "Ugh, please don't lecture me on safe s*x. It's unbecoming of you." "I just don't think I can handle two babies right now," I retort. "Well, if it does happen, then Sebastian gets another kid. He's already expressed that he wants two more, and he sure as hell isn't getting them the natural way." "And what would you like me to tell Sebastian when he comes asking for you?" "Tell him that I'm sick." "And if he wants to check on you?" "Tell him that I'm bleeding heavily."
