With his head stretched all the way back it wasn’t easy to see much. But by tipping his face a little either way Bobby gained more than just a peripheral view of his surroundings. He saw sapphire water cupped by mountains: a much smaller lake than Chautauqua, but utterly pristine. Edged with an unbroken perimeter of trees it was lovely beyond belief to his flatlander’s gaze. He saw the wide clearing by the shore with galleries of rough bleachers around a central depression in a kind of rustic amphitheater. He saw a few big old dun-colored trucks with high axles and wheels, like old Army (or more likely logging) vehicles built to handle the rough terrain.
