THE BEAST BENEATH THE THRONE

1900 Words
The roar rolled through the Chamber of Crowns like a tidal wave. The ancient pillars trembled. Dust drifted from the domed ceiling. The seven crowns resting upon their thrones vibrated softly, their gemstones glowing brighter as though responding to the presence awakening beneath them. Everyone instinctively stepped back. Everyone except Aurelia. She stood frozen at the edge of the widening crack, the Imperial Key still warm in her hand. Those golden eyes stared up at her from the darkness. Not with hunger. Not with rage. Recognition. A strange feeling settled over her. She should have been terrified. Instead... She felt an overwhelming sadness. Lucien moved immediately, placing himself between Aurelia and the opening. "Step back." His voice remained calm, but it carried unmistakable urgency. She didn't argue. Slowly, she obeyed. The floor shook again. This time, the crack widened enough for brilliant silver light to pour upward from the abyss below. Captain Rowan Hale drew the elegant sword fastened beneath his coat. The blade wasn't ordinary steel. Silver symbols glowed along its length. The other Imperial Guards followed his lead. Within seconds, seven glowing swords pointed toward the opening. Cassian, however... Did nothing. He simply watched. Almost thoughtfully. Lucien noticed. "You aren't preparing to fight." Cassian's eyes never left the crack. "Because fighting it would be a waste of time." Captain Hale frowned. "You know what's down there." "I know what was imprisoned." "There is a difference." --- The rumbling stopped. An eerie silence followed. Then... A massive claw emerged from the darkness. It rested gently on the edge of the broken marble. The claws alone were longer than a man's hand. Silver scales covered the powerful limb, each one reflecting the chamber's light like polished metal. Aurelia held her breath. Another claw appeared. Then a powerful head slowly rose from beneath the floor. Gasps echoed around the chamber. It wasn't a wolf. Nor was it a dragon. It resembled both. Its body carried the powerful build of an enormous wolf, yet shimmering silver scales protected parts of its neck and shoulders. Majestic antlers swept gracefully backward from its head like branches carved from crystal. Its golden eyes shone with ancient intelligence. It climbed from the abyss with slow, deliberate movements. Nearly four meters tall at the shoulder. Every step radiated quiet authority. The creature looked around the chamber. It ignored the drawn swords. Ignored Lucien. Ignored Cassian. Its gaze settled only on Aurelia. The enormous beast lowered its head. Then... To everyone's astonishment... It bowed. --- Captain Hale stared in disbelief. "It..." His voice failed him. Seraphine closed her eyes. "The Guardian." Lucien whispered the name almost reverently. "So the legends were true." Aurelia looked at the magnificent creature standing before her. "I don't understand." The beast took one slow step closer. Its enormous head lowered until its eyes were level with hers. She could see her own reflection in them. There was no anger. No violence. Only unwavering loyalty. The Imperial Key in her hand began glowing brighter. Without thinking... She raised her hand. Lucien's heart skipped. "Aurelia, wait—" Her fingertips gently touched the creature's forehead. The instant they made contact... The entire chamber disappeared. --- She found herself standing in a vast meadow beneath a silver moon. The air smelled of pine forests and fresh rain. Snow-covered mountains surrounded the valley. A magnificent palace stood in the distance, its white towers shining beneath the stars. Children laughed somewhere nearby. Music drifted through the wind. Everything felt peaceful. Everything felt... Home. A young woman stood waiting beneath a flowering tree. She wore a simple white dress. No crown. No jewels. Yet Aurelia recognized her immediately. Queen Elena. Her mother. This time, she wasn't a ghostly echo. She smiled warmly. "You've grown into exactly the woman I hoped you would become." Aurelia's eyes filled with tears. "...Mother?" Elena stepped closer. "I wish I could hold you." "I wish I had watched you grow." "I wish I could have celebrated every birthday." Her smile trembled slightly. "But I had only one chance." "One choice." "And I would make it again." Aurelia tried to speak. Nothing came out. Elena gently continued. "If you're seeing this..." "...then Aster has accepted you." "Aster?" "The Guardian." She looked toward the mountains. "He protected our family long before I was born." "He will protect you now." Aurelia glanced back. The silver-scaled creature stood quietly at the edge of the meadow. Watching. Waiting. Like a faithful friend. Elena's expression became serious. "Listen carefully." "We don't have much time." "The stories you've heard..." "...are incomplete." "Cassian did betray the Council." "But he didn't destroy the Eighth Empire." Aurelia looked up sharply. "Then who did?" Before Elena could answer— The peaceful meadow flickered. The sky darkened. A deafening crack split the air. Elena's expression changed instantly. "No..." "They found us." She took Aurelia's hands. Her voice became urgent. "Remember this." "Trust the man who protects people before power." "Not the one who seeks power to protect people." Aurelia frowned. "What does that mean?" "It means—" The vision shattered. --- Aurelia gasped as she found herself back inside the Chamber of Crowns. Only a second had passed. The Guardian still stood before her. Its head remained bowed. Everyone in the chamber stared at her. Lucien stepped forward. "What happened?" She looked at him, still struggling to breathe evenly. "I..." "My mother spoke to me." Cassian's eyes widened. "She left a memory." Seraphine whispered, "The Queen's Blessing..." Lucien searched Aurelia's face. "What did she tell you?" Aurelia looked from Lucien... ...to Cassian. Then quietly repeated the final words she had heard. "She said..." "'Trust the man who protects people before power...'" "'...not the one who seeks power to protect people.'" Silence settled over the chamber. Lucien's expression didn't change. Cassian's smile disappeared. Neither man spoke. Because both of them understood exactly what the Queen had meant. And for the first time... Aurelia realized the greatest danger might not be choosing the wrong side. It might be discovering that neither side had told her the whole truth The silence stretched across the Chamber of Crowns. No one rushed to explain the Queen's final message. No one dared interpret it. Even the Guardian—Aster—remained perfectly still, his golden eyes moving between Aurelia, Lucien, and Cassian as though he, too, understood that history had reached another turning point. Aurelia tightened her grip on the Imperial Key. "I don't like secrets." Her voice echoed through the chamber. "I've spent my entire life believing facts matter more than assumptions." She looked directly at Lucien. "If my mother trusted someone..." "...I deserve to know who she meant." Lucien met her gaze. "So do I." "You don't know?" "No." She frowned. "I thought you knew everything." A faint smile crossed his face. "I know enough to recognize when I don't." Cassian folded his hands behind his back. "Elena always preferred riddles." "They forced people to think instead of obey." Seraphine looked sharply toward him. "You don't get to speak as though you knew her heart." Cassian's expression softened. "No." "I probably don't." His honesty surprised everyone. --- Aster suddenly lifted his head. His ears turned toward the northern wall. A deep growl rumbled inside his chest. Not aggressive. Warning. Captain Hale immediately raised his sword. "What is it?" The Guardian's eyes narrowed. He took one deliberate step in front of Aurelia. Shielding her. Lucien noticed the movement. "He senses something." The chamber lights flickered. Once. Then again. The silver flames burning inside the ancient braziers shifted from pale white... ...to deep blue. Seraphine's face lost all color. "No..." She whispered. "They've entered the Archive." --- Miles away, beneath another part of the North Tower... Three hooded figures stood before a circular stone gateway. Unlike the Chamber of Crowns, this place was abandoned. Broken pillars lay scattered across the floor. Ancient banners had long since faded into grey. The tallest figure removed a black glove and pressed his palm against the center of the gate. Dark crimson symbols spread across the stone. One of the others asked quietly, "Will he awaken?" The leader smiled. "He never slept." The massive gateway slowly opened. Cold air rushed from the darkness beyond. Something inside exhaled. Not loudly. But heavily. As though an enormous creature had been breathing in silence for centuries. --- Back in the Chamber... Evelyn's tablet emitted a sharp tone. She glanced down. Her calm expression vanished. "Your Majesty." Lucien turned. "What happened?" "The surveillance system has failed." "Completely?" "Every camera." "Every sensor." She looked up. "We're blind." Captain Hale immediately gave orders. "Form a defensive circle." The Imperial Guards moved without hesitation, surrounding Aurelia and the empty throne. Cassian watched them quietly. "You still think walls will save you." Captain Hale didn't even look at him. "They'll buy time." "For what?" "For Her Highness to survive." Aurelia looked around in disbelief. "They're protecting me like I'm already their queen." Captain Hale finally met her eyes. "No." His answer was respectful. "We're protecting the woman who hasn't decided whether she wants to become one." --- Lucien stepped toward the center of the chamber. "The Imperial Key." Aurelia looked at the silver key in her hand. "What about it?" "It isn't simply a symbol." "It opens something." She looked down. "What?" Before he could answer, the key became almost too warm to hold. Lines of silver light spread across its surface, revealing intricate carvings hidden beneath the polished metal. Aurelia instinctively turned it over. Tiny words appeared. Not engraved. Glowing. She could somehow read them despite never having seen the language before. "What does it say?" Lucien asked. Aurelia read slowly. "'Only the heart that chooses mercy over vengeance may claim the Crown of Eight.'" Silence. Cassian lowered his eyes. Seraphine closed hers. Lucien stared at the key. "So that part survived..." Aurelia looked up. "What does it mean?" Lucien answered quietly. "It means the Crown cannot be taken." "It must accept its ruler." --- Aster suddenly roared. Not at anyone in the chamber. At the ceiling. The entire room shook violently. Stone cracked overhead. A shower of dust rained onto the marble floor. Captain Hale looked upward. "Everyone move!" An enormous section of the ceiling exploded inward. Stone blocks crashed onto the floor, shattering several marble tiles. When the dust settled... Three figures stood upon the broken ledge high above the chamber. Each wore black armor marked with a silver crescent moon. Their faces remained hidden behind polished masks. The tallest stepped forward. He slowly removed his mask. Aurelia felt the blood drain from her face. The man looked almost exactly like her. The same silver-grey eyes. The same dark hair. Even the shape of his face was strikingly similar. He smiled. "Little cousin." His voice carried effortlessly through the chamber. "I've searched for you..." "...for twenty-two years." Lucien's expression hardened. "Orion." Cassian's eyes widened with genuine disbelief. "No..." "You're alive?" The newcomer laughed softly. "You sound disappointed." Seraphine stared at him in horror. "It wasn't Cassian." She whispered the realization. "It was you." Orion inclined his head politely. "Thank you." "I was beginning to wonder how much longer that would take." He looked directly at Aurelia. "My name is Orion Caelestis." A pause. "And unlike everyone else in this room..." "...I don't intend to ask for your loyalty." His smile widened. "I'm here to take what belongs to our family.
